The Evolution series was first launched in Japan in 1992 with the Lancer GSR Evolution. Built to allow Mitsubishi to compete in the World Rally Championship, the first Evo pioneered the formula that all subsequent cars would follow - a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, big spoilers and lightweight interior. The Evo II and III were launched respectively in 1993 and 1995, with the Evolution IV in 1996. The first of the more modern Mitsubishi Carisma based models was the Lancer Evo V, which made its world debut at the Tokyo Show in October 1997.
None of these models was ever officially imported to the UK, and it was only during the late nineties when the British public started to appreciate Japanese sports cars like the Subaru Impreza and Nissan Skyline that demand for Lancer Evo models in the UK really took off. An outlet of Ralliart, Mitsubishi's rally preparation arm, sold the Evo VI from early 1998, but it wasn't until May 1999 that Mitsubishi officially launched the car in the UK coinciding with the development of Ralliart UK, a new company offering closer ties with the UK importer.
Between early 1998 and May 1999, a number of 'standard' GSR models, and lightweight RS and RS II models were sold from the Dudley dealership but when Ralliart UK was formed, the range was rationalised. The RS II received a number of slight changes and became the RSX, produced in a limited batch of 30 cars with aluminium front wings and bonnet, no ABS or AYC, and were 110kg lighter than other Evo VI models. It's an astonishingly effective B-road tool, capable of holding huge speed mid-corner and nothing will stay with a well-driven RSX in these conditions and trying to keep up in a Porsche or Ferrari would be a touch optimistic.
Of the 30 Ralliart RSX cars produced for the UK, 10 were in Silver and 20 in White. Built in 1999 and first registered here on 02/06/2000, this right-hand-drive Evo VI RSX is one of the White ones. Our caring vendor has owned the car for 16 years and has used it sparingly in that time, covering only 3,200 miles during that period. The car's total mileage from new is 31,847 and this is supported by no less than 13 MOT Certificates.
Prior to our vendor's purchase on 5/01/2004, a previous owner had carried out a number of modifications and upgrades. These were carried out by Ralliart and Power Engineering and include; Quick shift gear change, rare Compomotive MO6 classic-style alloys, special oil (Millers) renewed in diffs, gearbox, engine, Carbon rear spoiler fitted (the original is available to be collected by buyer), Eibach suspension, HKS stainless exhaust system, strut brace, ARP engine bolts, turbo-timer fitted to protect turbo(titanium turbo), HKS digital boost gauge, Tracker and 2 immobilisers fitted, Helix Ceramic Clutch and Ralli Art livery decals fitted.
During our vendor's ownership, he has fitted a Ross Sport cambelt & tensioners kit ( in Nov 2017 less than 650 miles since), and the oil and filters have been changed yearly using Miller Oils, a fresh MOT was issued on 17th October 2020 with No Advisories. The car appears to be in splendid condition and is a credit to him. Supplied with the car are the aforementioned MOT Certificates, all the Ralliart manuals/handbooks, an original Ralliart folder, both sets of keys, Haynes Mitsubishi Evo book by Andy Butler and a framed photograph of Tommi Makinen signing the bonnet of this car.
The Evo VI is one of the quickest real-world cars around and this well-equipped, fastidiously maintained, patently cherished example is one of the best we have seen. If a ballistic rally car for the road is your thing, then book an appointment to come along and get to know this remarkable little Evo.
