- One of only 16, this rare 996 GT2 MKII would make a superb collector's car
Throughout recent Porsche 911 history, the GT2 has been the fastest, most focused and most expensive version of the iconic car. In 2000, when Porsche introduced the 996 version with 483 bhp and no four-wheel drive or driver aids, it quickly gained a reputation as the ultimate driver's car. This makes the GT2 one of the more interesting cars of recent times as most GT Porsches go on to become collectable and a car with a reputation like this can only gain kudos and legendary status over time. No four-wheel drive, stability control or traction control, no rear seats, thin glass and a 30mm lower ride height set the opening scene. At the back, the GT2 has a larger fixed wing with extra air intakes tucked into the supports to feed the turbochargers and inside, carbon trim is liberally added and there are huge race-style leather seats, but no rear seats. The 483bhp engine is derived directly from the company's Le Mans-winning 911 GT1 with a twin-turbo 3.6-litre configuration featuring magnesium alloy and titanium in abundance and the advanced 6-speed gearbox is derived directly from the GT2 race cars. With 0-60 in just 4 seconds and 0-100 in 8.5, make no mistake this is a seriously quick, rear-wheel-drive 911.
For the final run out in 2004 only sixteen RHD GT2 MKIIs came to the UK featuring more power (483 bhp), revised suspension and new alloy wheels.
Offered here is a stunning, UK-supplied, right-hand drive 996 GT2 MKII finished in Arctic Silver (92U) with a black interior. The visual appearance has been enhanced by the addition of clever vinyl graphics in Charcoal Grey which transforms the look and the wheels have been painted in Anthracite which really gives modernity to the effect. The interior is classic 911 and features the extensive use of soft black leather.
The service book contains two stamps above the PDI from OPC Newcastle - OPC Cambridge in 2006 at 12,191 miles and a specialist in 2009 at 23,941. It was purchased by our vendor in 2008, making him only the car's second owner, and has remained a coveted Porsche in his collection and cherished within his garaging. The current indicated mileage is 24,956.
With only 16 examples of the 996 GT2 MKII ever sold in the UK, production numbers would suggest that this distinctive example still has a hike to come in value with such low numbers. It would make a superb collector's car, particularly with this provenance.
