SUMMARY
A striking example of TVR’s charismatic Chimaera, ready to enjoy the summer sunshine
DESCRIPTION
Background:
TVR launched the Chimaera at the 1992 Earl’s Court Motor Show, positioning it in the range as a long-distance tourer – longer, more spacious and with slightly softer suspension than its sister Griffith, from which it derived the backbone chassis and Rover V8-based engine, initially in 4-litre guise, mated to a 5-speed gearbox.
Designer John Ravenscroft crafted another sensuous, organic shape which was initially intended to replace the even more bonkers Griffith, but demand for both cars was so strong that TVR continued production of both models.
Performance was – as is to be expected – strong. With 243PS (240bhp) under the driver’s right foot and nothing in the way of electronic safety nets, the Chimaera would sprint to 60mph in 5.1 seconds (0-100mph in 12.5 seconds) on its way to a quoted top speed of 152mph (245kmh).
The car:
This striking, three previous owner example is finished in very rare Metallic Masala Pink - not as retina-searing as the name might suggest - with a tasteful pale grey leather interior. It has covered under 50,000 miles and was in the hands of its long-term keeper for 18 years, with his wife taking the car on three years ago.
Supplied new with rare factory-fitted power steering, this is an honest, well-maintained example with a comprehensive TVR service history up to 42,446 miles and it comes with a fresh MOT with 'No Advisories'. The vendor reports that the car has always been garaged and covered when not in use. It has had little recent use, as evidenced by the older MOTs. Future-proofing peace of mind comes in the form of a body-off chassis refurbishment - including new outriggers - by a TVR specialist five years ago. New exhaust mounts, manifold fasteners and fuel pump were fitted at the same time.
This is not a concours trailer queen but is eminently usable for road trips or sunny day blasts. It wears the patina of age easily, with a few marks and scratches commensurate with its years and mileage. The leather interior is in good condition, with no rips or tears, though a new carpet may be on the cards. Both the black ‘Surrey’ roof and original 5-spoke factory alloys are in good condition. The dashboard was replaced with a machine-turned item a year ago.
The engine starts, idles and runs well with no smoke. The gearbox changes well and the rear axle is quiet and problem-free. The vendor reports that the car is a fine drive, with impressive power and good handling.
Supplied new by David Gerald TVR in 2003, the original TVR service manual and hand book are included in the comprehensive history file, along with receipts for parts or work carried out over the years, plus a copy of Steve Heath’s TVR manual.
Summary:
A well-maintained example of TVR’s most ‘sensible’ roadster, in a very rare colour, ready to be used, enjoyed and improved by a new owner. All you need is some summer weather!
