The first of countless upgrades to the perennial 911 came in 1966, two years after production had commenced, with the introduction of the 911S. Easily distinguishable by its stylish Fuchs five-spoked alloy wheels, the 'S' featured a heavily revised engine producing 160bhp. In 1967 the 911T (Touring) was introduced as a new base model, initially with the 2.0-litre engine in 110bhp form before gaining the 2.2-litre unit along with the rest of the range in 1969, by which time the 911's wheelbase had been extended by 57mm to tame the occasionally wayward handling. By this time the models on offer had stabilised at three: the entry-level 911T, middle-ranking 911E and top-of-the-range 911S, all of which were available as either a closed coupÚ or Targa convertible. With the 2.2-litre engine's arrival, a common type of cylinder head was adopted, the differing power outputs being determined principally by valve timing rather than valve sizes as had been the case hitherto. In 1972 all 911 variants received the 2,341cc (nominally 2.4-litre) unit, which in 'T' specification produced a maximum of 130bhp, the same output as the original 911 of 1963.

Offered here is a left-hand drive, Porsche 911T 2.4 delivered to its first owner in the United States in 1973. Thought to have spent much of its life in California, this car is finished in the period colour of Sepia Brown (Code 415 for '73) with black upholstery and tan carpets. Other options at the time included a manual antenna, loudspeaker and noise suppression, tinted glass, and Pirelli tyres.

The car was recently imported into the UK and hence is supplied with a NOVA reference number and a copy of its State of Ohio title ready for a prospective buyer to MOT the car before beginning the registration process with the DVLA.

Recently re-painted in its original colour, the interior has benefitted from new carpets, new headlining, seat covers and door panels. At the same time, the engine was taken apart and resealed with new piston rings, new pistons and cylinders.

Supplied with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirming that the engine is the original unit, this 911T is now showing 51,062 miles on the odometer (not warranted). This is a really smart 911 with excellent paint, good shut lines, tight rubbers and very good brightwork. The engine bay looks very tidy and the interior is a credit to the car with it's traditional incomprehensibly placed controls and early Blaupunkt stereo. The colour may not be everyone's cup of tea (on reflection they are about the same colour) but, in the early seventies, this was a particularly trendy hue.

About three years ago these early cars were reaching some very high numbers but, thankfully, the market has returned to more sensible levels and cars like this can be bought to use and enjoy having fun with like-minded enthusiasts. At today's sensible estimate, this delightful 2.4T could be the start of a new adventure.
