SUMMARY

The brainchild of Colin & Alister McRae, this buggy was the development prototype.

DESCRIPTION

Background:

The McRae Buggy was conceived by Colin and Alister McRae, the talented rally drivers for whom an introduction is scarcely needed. The idea behind the buggy was to create a purpose-built off-road vehicle capable of competing in some of the world’s most challenging motorsport events or a one make series.

Tragically, Colin McRae passed away in 2007 before he could see the full realisation of the buggy. Despite this, Alister was determined to push forward with the project in his brother’s memory, knowing that they had both shared a love for motorsport and engineering.

The Car:

This specific vehicle is the first prototype McRae Buggy, a milestone in the development of a new breed of off-road rally car. Designed for performance, the buggy features a robust yet lightweight chassis, engineered to handle the gruelling demands of off-road events like the Dakar Rally and stage rallies. Under the bonnet, the prototype is powered by a high performance engine — an agile, responsive Yamaha 1050cc nitro engine with CVT drive as used in a Yamaha Skidoo. This combination allowed the buggy to deliver the power and control needed for high speed desert racing and off-road challenges, with the engine providing a balance of torque and acceleration across all types of terrain.

The McRae Buggy’s suspension system was another area of focus, designed to withstand the punishing jumps and harsh terrain typically encountered in rally events. The car was created not just as a concept, but as a real contender, capable of going toe to toe with the best in the off-road racing world. The prototype features a bespoke suspension setup with long travel shocks, giving it superior handling on uneven ground and enabling it to clear obstacles with ease.

While the car is a prototype, it has been meticulously maintained, ensuring that it is in excellent running condition. The low mileage and full MOT status make it ready for the road or for use in motorsport events, should the owner wish to take it to the next level.

Summary:

Whether as a collector's piece or an off-road performance machine, this buggy represents the culmination of the McRae brothers' shared passion for rallying and engineering.
