SUMMARY
In the UK since 1974, this 1917 Model T has been restored and re-bodied as a Fruit and Veg van by our knowledgeable vendor.
DESCRIPTION
Although early Model Ts were built by hand in the traditional manner, in 1913, Ford revolutionised automobile production with his moving assembly line, drastically reducing the time from 12.5 hours down to just over 1.5 hours per unit. Mass production really put the Model T on the map and gave rise in the famous motto 'available in any colour so long as it's black', although early cars were actually sold in a variety of colours. Although the basic formula remained substantially the same throughout the Model T's almost two decades long-production life, numerous minor improvements were made, including an electric starter from 1918, routinely updated styling and the option of wire-spoked wheels on later models. In 1923, Ford added a raked windscreen and, mid-way through the year, replaced the wooden firewall with a metal one, with a standardised instrument panel.
Over the years, the Model T was available in a variety of body styles including a Roadster, Coupe, Coupelet, Runabout, Roadster Torpedo, Town Car, Touring, and the Fordor and Tudor sedans.
An earlier import to the UK, arriving around 1974, this left-hand drive 1913 T was originally, we believe, a Tourer, and was owned by that first UK keeper until February 2017 when our vendor bought the 'T' purely as a rolling-chassis, so we can only assume that the body had issues. Our vendor, a diehard vintage and Edwardian enthusiast, wanted a commercial T to fill a gap in his collection, so after much research, the body was built by his in-house team replicating an existing car, possibly a Model TT. Bodied as a Fruit and Veg delivery van, it presents really well and we understand drives very well considering its advancing years. This T represents super value for money and could be a great rolling bill board for a company or simply be enjoyed in the summer months taking in a few shows.
