SUMMARY

Super 1917 Model T Coupe - an older restoration and properly maintained in a private Collection.

DESCRIPTION

With the introduction of a moving assembly line in 1913, Henry Ford famously turned his Model T into the world's first mass-made car. A year later, Model Ts represented 56% of all automobiles manufactured in the USA. However, it was not just the sheer volume of Model Ts rolling off the production line that motorised America, it was the inherent quality of the design. Launched in 1908, the T's chassis and mechanical components were made from exceptionally durable, high-grade vanadium steel. The Ford also featured a compact 2,890cc, side-valve, four-cylinder engine that pioneered the use of a detachable cylinder head. Mounted in-unit with the clutch and 2-speed epicyclic gearbox assembly, it developed some 23bhp at a leisurely 1,600rpm and 80lb/ft of torque. Top speed was limited to around 45mph depending upon bodywork, whilst brakes operated on both the transmission and rear wheels.

Ford never actually offered a 'Doctors Coupe' amongst their large list of bodywork options for the Model T. The original 'Coupe' model was an enclosed car with one seat and a trunk, and they became very popular with country doctors for several reasons, including
- It's a Ford, which meant Doc could usually get where he was going.
- It's enclosed, because Doc had to be available in all weathers.
- It has a trunk, so Doc could carry extra equipment that wouldn't fit in his little black bag.
So, over the years, the sheer number of doctors who drove Model T Coupes resulted in it becoming a commonly-known designation.

On offer from a large private Collection of Edwardian and vintage automobiles, this example arrived in the UK on 8th January 2015 and stayed with its first keeper for a year and a half, changing hands and remaining with our vendor for the last seven years. Clearly an older restoration carried out prior to arriving in the UK, this Doctors Coupe has been maintained in-house by our vendor who has a team looking after his Collection of these special early cars. This is a super opportunity to maybe get behind the wheel of one of Fords most iconic automobiles and, once you get the hang of the unconventional pedal layout and the 'plan well ahead' brakes, it will be a lot of fun.
