SUMMARY
Rare JAP-engined Brough Superior SS80.
DESCRIPTION
- The 'Rolls-Royce of Motorcycles' was the way the press, in period, described George Brough's bespoke machines
- Favoured by the rich and famous and built using the best components and most powerful engines available at the time
- The SS80 used side-valve engines and were road tested to 80mph before being released from the factory, the SS100 used an overhead-valve engine and were road tested to 100mph
- The SS80 model was first introduced at the Olympia motor show in October 1924 and was met with great applause, The Motor Cycle Magazine commenting 'More rakish looking but just as imposing as ever is a good description of the latest Brough Superior'
- The engine was the robust 981cc ‘KTC’ engine by JAP and was the perfect match for the superb handling characteristics of the SS80. The 1930 sales catalogue listed a new SS80 Deluxe (JAP KTCY) for the princely sum of £135 with a sprung frame with a £10 reduction in price for the rigid version
- Despatched from the Works on 01/10/1930 to first owner, Leah and Sons, by LNER passenger train, this SS80 Deluxe model was specified with a rigid frame and ‘Black Alpine’ petrol tank, HW gearbox and Brampton forks. The works record further remarks include ‘Tank top switch, seat tube oil tank, detachable carrier, rectangular-type pannier bags and throttle twist grip’ and the registration TV 3009, which pleasingly remains with it today
- The RF60 'buff' logbook, dated September 1960, lists former owners; Mr Michael Reed on 17/03/1960 then Mr Oliver, Bucks 30/12/1965. The Brough was sold in 1978 to Mr Ronald Coppin and would remain with him for the next 28 years, stored off the road in partially dismantled but complete condition
- The bike was later acquired by Brough enthusiast, Jeff Stone, in 2006 and would finally return to the road following a rebuild by him and shown at the annual Brough Club rally at Middle Aston, later successfully completing the 2011 Banbury Run
- Acquired in 2019 by our vendor who has since covered many memorable miles touring throughout Austria, France, Italy, Switzerland and Scotland
- Offered with a comprehensive history file that includes a copy of the Works Record confirming it retains its original frame, engine and registration numbers, numerous receipts, old photos, old MOTs, old RF60 dated 1960 and other related items
- Recent major recommission included the following :-Make new oil pump feed, remove fuel tank, make new fuel line, fit chain oiler, clean exhaust and remove loose exhaust coolers, fit new exhaust coolers (cored, machined and threaded to fit by Simon Miles), make and fit rear exhaust frame bracket, fit new Brough Superior foot rubbers, make through bolts, repair and adjust Karslake stand, remove wheels and check and clean brake shoes and grease, fit new primary and rear 3/8 x 5/8 heavy duty chains, adjust timing chain, check and adjust tappets, remove, clean and check spark plugs, adjust valve lifter mechanism, make correct rear brake rod and mechanism with tiller nut, repair front brake cable and fit tiller nut, adjust and repair clutch cable and handlebar control, remove and adjust rear brake pedal and stop, remove seat, clean and paint spring covers, make and fit new gear change knob, check magneto points, clean slip ring and lubricate, clean and polish paintwork, drain sump, top up oil and road test
- This highly original SS80 awaits its next adventure
- Presented in good overall condition and UK-registered on a current V5C
