SUMMARY
This older restored sporting 12/60 was built with competition work in mind, featuring a lightweight fabric two-seater body and slab fuel tank - unused for some years, however running and driving, an exciting recommissioning project.
DESCRIPTION
In 1931, the 12/50 was joined by an even sportier partner, the 12/60. It was powered by a 1,645cc, overhead valve, four-cylinder engine with a high compression ratio and twin carburettors resulting in a useful increase in maximum power to 56bhp. The gearbox was a four-speed manual, suspension was by semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear and the new model was pulled up by four-wheel, cable-operated drum brakes.
A sports saloon, four-seater sports and two-seater sports were offered, the last clothed in graceful Beetleback coachwork. Testing a 12/60 Beetleback in 1931, Motor Sport found that the car could almost touch 80mph, yet was capable of returning 30mpg even when driven hard. Today, Alvis' 12/50 and 12/60 are among the most highly sought after sports cars of their day, with an enthusiastic following worldwide.
VU 7678 carries a lightweight sports two-seater special body and was purchased from the deceased estate of Mr Michael J. Thwaites, former director of Thwaites Ltd. of Leamington Spa, the dumper truck manufacturers. The Alvis obviously generated owner loyalty as he had owned the car for 27-years since 1995 and, prior to then, it had been enjoyed by David Batten from Oakham, Rutland who kept the car for 15-years between 1980 and 1995.
The Alvis has been in dry storage for many years, and has recently had some light recommissioning to return it to running order. This included replacing the ignition coil, plugs, battery and flushing the fuel system through, however, the new owner will need to give the car a full checkover / light recommissioning prior to returning to the road. The gearbox is believed to be from a Silver Eagle sports model, which would be ideal for competition with its quicker change. It's supplied with the V5C, various instruction books, parts catalogues and many early Alvis Bulletins. In addition there is a full windscreen assembly with wiper mechanism, albeit the glass is cracked.
Offered at a very sensible estimate considering the above.
