SUMMARY
Delightful four-door, six-cylinder Morris Saloon that's been the subject of an older restoration.
DESCRIPTION
Often described as a Morris Oxford Six with a coach-built saloon body, the Major 6 was in production between 1930 and 1933. From 1931, the fiscal horsepower was dropped from 14.9 to 13.9 and, to achieve this the engine capacity was trimmed by a reduction of 2.25mm in the bore so that bore and stroke became 61.25 x 102mm, resulting in a cubic capacity of 1803cc. This, reduced size, six-cylinder had a four-bearing crankshaft, an air-cleaner-heater, and a fume-consumer head. Other standard features now included chrome finished automatic radiator shutters, a 4-speed 'twin-top' gearbox, Lockheed hydraulic brakes and a wide 52'' track.
This lovely little four-door Morris dates from 1932 and spent most of its early years in Scotland registered as MJ 895. It was re-registered on the 18th of August 1983 as 592 XUC after, we understand, a full restoration.
Presented in Gloss Black over a vibrant shade of Emerald Green and sits on matching black wire wheels, wrapped in a set of Waymaster tyres with the spare mounted on the nearside running board. The deep shine of the paintwork is complemented by the gleaming chrome radiator surround with ‘Calorstat’ thermostatically controlled louvres. The back doors are rear-hinged and the front doors conventional making access to the snug little cabin quite easy. At the rear sits a luggage rack with a smart wicker hamper set between the 'Deco-style' rear quarter bumpers. The 'flip-up' fuel filler cap is non-original but is in keeping with the style of this 1930s Morris.
The interior has been fully retrimmed with the Apple Green leather seats expertly upholstered. The green theme continues with matching carpeting throughout and green leather door cards on the wind-up windows, and wind deflectors and well-polished wooden door cappings enhance the feeling of luxury. The large ‘Pytchley’ sliding-roof has a baize headlining and this, along with the opening windscreen and scuttle ventilation, offers the 'best-of-both-worlds' in that you can be snug and warm without drafts, or conversely enjoy the fresh air to the full when the sun is out. The Oak dashboard has an oval-shaped central instrument cluster, the sizeable steering wheel has hand controls for the ignition timing and dipping headlights and the pedal arrangement is of the period with a centre throttle.
One of the most interesting aspects of this car is its extensive history file which contains original Owner’s Manuals and lubrication charts, as well as handwritten invoices for servicing carried out from the 1940s to the 1960s, billed in pounds, shillings and pence. The most recent history is from 2022/23 when our vendor fitted new spark plugs, leads, a replacement distributor cap and overhauled the fuel tank.
Only in production for a couple of years with comparatively few built, the Major 6 is consequently rare these days and this sparkling little Morris would be welcome anywhere.
