SUMMARY

Rebodied as a Vanden Plas-style tourer in the 1980s, this lovely Speed 20 has been well-campaigned and well-maintained. Offering fast, long-legged motoring - ideal for HERO ERA and Rally the Globe events.

DESCRIPTION

As often occurred with clients contemplating the design of their new Alvis, AJJ 588 was delivered by the Factory as a chassis to Messrs Charles Follett Ltd., the London Alvis dealer. A two-door 'Saloon' design by Vanden Plas was chosen by the first owner, bodywork which the car retained until the early 1980s when it was rebodied as a Vanden Plas-style tourer.

The car featured in the book Vanden Plas Coachbuilders (page 129) and was subsequently owned by Kenneth R. Day Esq who authored the seminal tome on Alvis cars, Alvis; the story of the Red Triangle. It also featured regularly in the Alvis Owners Club Bulletin over a period of four decades.

The earliest recorded competition entry in the history file was the Kentish Rally in 1954 when driven by Kenneth Day, and the last was the Brooklands Speed Trials in October 1999. The car competed regularly in the 1990s, the history file replete with scrutineering tags, programmes and results of VSCC events at Wiscombe, Colerne, Prescott, Brooklands and also the Brighton Speed Trials, for all of which the car qualified as the holder of a VSCC Competition Car Log Book (the Buff book).

The History file is extensive and carefully collated, including important original documents such as the Factory Car Record and Archive, and a new registration book issued in April 1954. The extensive servicing and maintenance section of the history file begins in 1974 with a purchase from South London Pistons Ltd., and ends in June 2023 with the water pump and starter motor being overhauled and an electric fan fitted by the excellent Red Triangle.

Alvis owners are notoriously serious about servicing and maintenance and hence the car is accompanied by:

  • The Factory lubrication chart
  • Description of the petrol Telegage
  • Lucas Technical Service manual
  • Factory Handbook of Instructions
  • Repair Manual
  • Alvis Owners Club articles
  • Alvis; Story of the Red Triangle by Kenneth Day Esq, previous owner of the car
  • Vanden Plas; Coachbuilders by Brian Smith documenting all cars bodied by Vanden Plas, including this car (page 129)

Offered with hood, tonneau, hood cover, original starting handle and just fitted with a new set of Blockley tyres and tubes.
