SUMMARY
An outstanding SS1 Tourer from 26-years ownership. Fully restored using exclusively original parts and in excellent condition. Surely one of the best to come to market.
DESCRIPTION
Forerunner of the Jaguar marque, SS originally stood for the Swallow Sidecar & Coachbuilding Company, which had been founded in Blackpool, England by William Walmsley in 1922. The Company branched out into motor manufacture in 1926, its first major success being an attractive sports saloon on the Austin Seven chassis. The design was the work of Walmsley's business partner, William Lyons, whose future Jaguar creations would confirm his reputation as one of the British motor industry's most gifted stylists. The SS1, launched in 1932, is a close-coupled coupé based on the Standard Ensign 16hp. The chassis and body were designed by Lyons; a long bonnet, tiny passenger compartment and helmet-type front wings imply the ultimate in high performance of the time and this is what ultimately created a blueprint for Jaguars of the future, combining sporting good looks with a better-than-average specification. Indeed, so successful was Lyons' new venture that production of Swallow-bodied cars ceased altogether in 1933, and SS Cars Limited was formed, initially as a subsidiary of the Swallow sidecar-building business before, in 1945, becoming rebranded as Jaguar Cars Ltd.
This superb matching numbers SS1 20hp Tourer was supplied directly from the factory to Henlys of Oxford on 14th December 1934 and onwards to its first owner, Lt. Col. H.D. Crossland of Henley-on-Thames. This was followed by a period of ownership in the United States under Mr. J. Kaplan of California and, thanks to its time in that dry American state, it remained exceptionally well-preserved.
In 1997, this exceptional vehicle found its way into the hands of its present fastidious owner who commenced a sympathetic restoration, including the rebuilding/restoration of the ash frame and a change in colour from its original black to a classic Old English White. The tan upholstery had not suffered too much from the California sun and was retained, complemented by a new hood and side screens. Additionally, a comprehensive mechanical restoration was undertaken at the same time ensuring that the car not only looks fantastic but also performs well.
Since its restoration, the car has only been sporadically used, as its owner currently resides abroad and reserves its outings for dry days. When not in use, it resides in heated and dehumidified storage, receiving regular maintenance from marque specialists Davenport Cars. The sole modification made to the original design was the fitting of a second 'owl's eye' rear lamp which incorporates flashing indicators, enhancing safety without compromising the car's authenticity.
With a complete nut and bolt restoration undertaken between 1990 and 2010, utilising only original parts, this car is truly a testament to the dedication and attention to detail of its past and present owners. It's an outstanding post-vintage tourer from long-term caring ownership and is very sensibly guided. We invite and encourage your inspection of this lovely motor car to fully appreciate the quality on offer.
