DESCRIPTION
Although Rolls-Royce's acquisition of Bentley Motors in 1931 robbed the latter of its independence, it did at least ensure the survival of the Bentley name. Launched in 1933, the first of what would become known as the 'Derby Bentleys' continued the marque's sporting associations. The 'Silent Sportscar', as it was quickly dubbed, had few peers and as a tireless long-distance tourer, it combining traditional Rolls-Royce refinement with Bentley performance and handling. Based on the contemporary Rolls-Royce 20/25, the 3½ litre Bentley was slightly shorter in the wheelbase and employed a tuned, twin-SU-carburettor-equipped version of the former's 3,669cc overhead-valve six; an increase in bore size upped the capacity to 4,257cc in 1936.
According to the current owner, the car was re-bodied from a 1935 Derby Saloon in the 1980s to its current 'Le Mans' style tourer bodywork. Described as having had extensive work carried out throughout its life and in fine running order, this attractive Bentley sounds superb and starts on the button. Having been built on a long wheel base chassis, the car is a full four seater and has ample power from the 3,665 cc straight six engine. NSU 242 is believed to have been a museum exhibit for a number of years. It was subsequently re-commissioned and has been used regularly by the owner, who is a lifelong Bentley Drivers' Club member. More recently, the car has competed in a number of rallies with the vendor, notably the Bentley Drivers Club North West Spring Run in 2012 and 2013, and it is 'always admired by other motorists'.
Supplied with a current MOT until March 2014 and UK registration document showing 4 previous owners since 1989, this attractive pre-war Bentley Tourer promises many more years of fine Historic open top motoring.
