DESCRIPTION

  • Designed by the SOE (Special Operations Executive) based at Welwyn during WWII as a lightweight mode of transport for the British Armed Forces
  • The Welbike became the smallest and lightest military vehicle produced by the British and was designed for single use
  • Perfect for use by paratroopers and was capable of folding up into a capsule and being dropped by parachute along with troops
  • In reality, few of the c.3,600 bikes produced actually saw service, some did get deployed to Arnhem and some were used on D-Day
  • Built by Excelsior at their Tyburn factory and fitted with the two-stroke Villiers Junior 98cc engine
  • This older restoration example is presented in good overall condition
  • From a small European collection so probably one of the few bikes actually deployed in period
  • Not used for a while so will require some basic recommissioning before use
  • No paperwork with this lot
