DESCRIPTION

Porsche introduced the 356A at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1955 which thoroughly updated their 356 line-up of coupes, cabriolets and speedsters. Major changes were the 1600 cc engine, curved screen and revised suspension. Ruetter remained the coachbuilder. Tyre technology was improving which better suited suspension changes and higher fuel octanes allowed better performance. From the outside the 356A was only slightly different, wider tyres, a rubber strip below the doors and the curved screen marked the changes. The interior now received a flat-face dashboard, locking glove box and a radio. Other appointments included headlight flasher, automatic interior lighting and self cancelling indicators. A steering wheel lock and clock was an option.

Offered here is a remarkable example of a Porsche 356A T1 which is in very original condition with some unique production features. The history file shows that it was imported in 1997 and since then it has remained unused and properly stored. Originally owned by Mr Jan Hauge of Seattle, Washington State is still carries it USA number plates. Recently MOT'ed for the first time in the UK in readiness for registration.

For the 356A purists the complete set of dash knobs in ivory is fantastic, even the fuel filler cap has not been converted to the cork gasket. The overall condition is very good with the appearance of a carefully used significant Porsche. The engine is strong and runs cleanly making for brisk performance. Fully restored examples can reach into six figures but this is a delightful example that could be enjoyed as is or the foundation for a very worthwhile restoration. We 'get it' just as it is! The original engine was replaced whilst in the USA and we suspect a 1600S engine or even a Speedster engine was substituted judging by the performance and know upgrades in period.
