SUMMARY

A remarkably original example of BMW's first post-war completely new design.

DESCRIPTION

  • Making its debut at the 1951 Frankfurt Motor Show, the BMW 501 was the German automaker’s first all-new model following the conclusion of World War II
  • With its soft curves and swooping lines, the 501 earned the nickname 'Barockengel', or 'baroque angel' sharing the aesthetic qualities of the contemporary 'artistic movement'
  • It featured an all-new platform with a perimeter frame, double A-arm front suspension with torsion bar springs and a live axle at the rear
  • Initially offered as a saloon, cabriolet and coupé, it was renamed the 501/3 a year later after gaining a larger inline-six
  • Alongside this updated model, BMW sold a version called the 501-8 with a 2.6-litre V8 engine shared with the more luxurious 502
  • Dating from the final year of production, the V8-engined 501 four-door offered here appears to have been first UK-registered in 1975
  • It was sourced and imported from Sweden by our vendor around four years ago
  • It appears to be largely original and remains cosmetically untouched, although we understand it's in good mechanical order and was driven to Paris and back by our vendor in 2022
  • A time-warp example of a rare model that can be enjoyed 'as is', or perhaps fully refurbished and taken to the next level over a period of time

Wheels & Tyres:

Remarks

Good working order. Back in 2021 I had the exhausts changed to stainless steel ones with some welding under the car at a cost of £3000.00, invoice is present in the car’s folder. The 4 tyres on the car were changed just before the Paris trip back in July 2022. he spark plugs were changed at the same time. The front brake shoes were redone back in July 2023. The master brake cylinder was changed a week ago to a NOS one. The brakes need to be pressed twice after starting the car and sometimes while driving and feel a bit spongy but work well. They may need to be bled properly. The system is very simple. I drove the car earlier today (at the time of entering the car into the Auction) and it performed well.

Remarks

Good working order. The speedometer reads in kms and shows around 52,000kms.

Vehicle History

Remarks

Some history comes with the car. It has a document from Sweden dated May 2019 that shows the car passed the very strict Swedish test which is far more strict than British MOT. There is a repair manual book with photos written in German. The car has 2 instruction books.

Import Notes

I sourced and imported the car from Sweden about 4 years ago and I registered it here in uk so I’m the only registered keeper on V5C.
