SUMMARY
A early production E-Type, with many decades as a successful race car, ex-Allen Lloyd and a 6 Hours of Spa/Pre-63 GT regular.
DESCRIPTION
The car presented here is a 1961 Jaguar E-Type 3.8-litre Coupé – and apart from being a very successful historic race car it was fascinatingly the 58th example ever built. Our vendor's words, back in 2011 not long after acquiring #885058 - 'The car was a successful race car in the 1980s and 1990s; it was standing for ten years and I bought it from a chap (Allen Lloyd, the well known Jaguar enthusiast/collector/racer) who was considering retiring from racing after running it all over Europe. I rebuilt it and did a couple of races in it last year just to see how it was'. He has now been racing Jaguars for almost 30 years, tasting success in the 2011 Jaguar Challenge, coming top in his section for steel-bodied E-Types and enjoying three wins, three second places and a third in an eight-race series which saw him compete at Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Oulton Park and Germany's Nürburgring.
In more recent times, the venerable Jaguar (specified to Period E - 1947 to 1961, so steel-bodied, wire-wheels etc. - see FIA/HTP, valid until 31st December 2026) has been campaigned successfully at the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps many times and has won its Class, before making regular appearances in Motor Racing Legends' 'Pre ’63 GT' series for iconic GT cars of the late 1950s and early 1960s, which supports major meetings in the UK and Europe. Attracting closed GT cars of the period from the stables of Aston Martin, Ferrari, Austin-Healey, Jaguar, Triumph, Morgan and more, the races are long format, two-driver events with the jewel in the crown being the Royal Automobile Club Historic Tourist Trophy race. Split into four classes based on capacity, cars must be prepared to their original specification and must be presented as they would have looked in period. These carefully thought out regulations have resulted in full grids of immaculate, iconic GT cars and some very close racing.
#885058 has been evolved and regularly refreshed in-house by our vendor’s specialists, ensuring that its Sigma-based XK engine has always been on-song, making the car both reliable and competitive. A very well known car on the scene that has been campaigned and maintained by our Gentleman Driver vendor to the highest standards. Its FIA/HTP papers are all in-date, but we request that any interested parties satisfy themselves fully with these details and also, as with any competition car, the currency and suitability of any safety-related equipment (belts, seat, cage, tank and extinguisher etc). Full details of the car's current mechanical spec and championship eligibility can be supplied to interested parties.
This is a serious Jaguar racer, not a show queen but a competitive, functional 1960s GT wearing the patina of many hard fought battles and with decades of provenance. Welcome anywhere in the world of Historic and Classic Motorsport, this is a real opportunity to acquire a well established car from a very credible home.
