SUMMARY

DESCRIPTION

The first small Mercedes SL model was introduced in 1954 - the 190SL. The 190SL was aimed at a similar market as today's SLK model and had pretty styling modelled on the larger 300SL model. The 190SL shared many of its components with the 190 saloon range including the 1897cc straight four engine. Unlike the saloon the 190SL benefited from having twin-carbs which helped produce a top speed of 105mph. Most of the cars built had open roadster bodies although a small number of coupes were also produced. A factory hardtop was offered as an option as with this example, along with servo brakes (which were standard from 1956) and many other items.

The "SL' tag is supposed to translate as super-light, but despite aluminium doors, bonnet and bootlid, the 190SL is still a heavy vehicle and as such doing anything properly sporting with its 1.9-litre four-cylinder engine is a challenging undertaking. Settle for the fact that it is good, if not exhilarating to drive, with bags of style. In fact it's just the thing for those who can't afford ten times the price for the larger 300SL. Build quality is superb and this example represents excellent value given the appreciation and respect these cars have always enjoyed.

This 190SL was discovered by the current owner in Japan earlier this year and imported back to Europe in July. The car had been stored as part of a large private collection in a temperature controlled environment. An HMRC letter confirms that all European taxes and duties have been paid on this vehicle.

According to the original Japanese registration document, this 190SL was first registered in Japan in 1988. It is the owner's belief that the car was restored around this time. Consequently, the car is showing some signs of its age but is running and shows no signs of obvious corrosion to the body. The boot floor and engine bay are also solid and it would seem that with a small amount of cosmetic love, this car could be brought up to a very high standard. Alternatively, it could enjoyed as a useable classic in its current guise. We would urge any potential bidders to contact Silverstone Auctions for a fair and honest description of this vehicle prior to the sale. 190SLs in this condition are a rare find, as restored examples push towards and beyond the £100,000 mark.
