DESCRIPTION

Background:
The 1955 launch of the Silver Cloud marked a major change in construction for Rolls-Royce, the firm offering body-on-frame vehicles, rather than just a rolling chassis. Most of the 4,600-plus Cloud and Cloud II models were clothed with the standard pressed steel body, a bold, modern yet elegant, imposing and beautifully-proportioned shape, featuring lightweight aluminium alloy doors, bonnet and bootlid, which made a statement that Rolls-Royce was not being left in the past.
Power came from the company’s proven, silky-smooth and whisper-quiet 4.6-litre inlet-over-exhaust straight-six, with twin SUs introduced in 1957, mated to a GM 4-speed Hydramatic gearbox. With 155hp, a top speed of 102mph was achievable, while 0-60mph could be covered in 13.5 seconds – though it’s unlikely that anyone other than car magazine testers would ever have attempted anything so vulgar!
The Silver Cloud II was introduced in 1959, and along with it came the debut of the engine which was to power Rolls-Royce and Bentley products for more than half a century, the L Series V8. Initially in 6.5-litre guise, the improvements were most notable in performance with top speed increased to 114mph and 0-60 times cut to 10.9 seconds, while luxury was not compromised.
The car:
This stately Rolls comes with a lovely history file, with evidence of considerable sums having been spent over the last decade at a marque specialist. Most recently, the braking and power steering systems have seen attention, all of which is shown in the images. The vehicle appears to have been exported, then re-imported at some stage, how long the car was out of the country is unknown. The engine has been converted to run on modern pump fuel for added peace of mind and the cooling system has also been upgraded with a modern electric fan and a discreet digital gauge.
The car has been in the hands of its current owner for three years, and has been driven little, so it is safe to assume a measure of recommissioning would be wise. Mechanically the car runs and drives well, although externally and internally it is starting to show its age a little, whilst the body and paint are showing their age with some cracking and bubbling showing on the coachwork. The brightwork isn’t perfect with some light pitting and scratches.
Inside, the leather upholstery appears to be original, but is now showing cracks, so would benefit from attention and while much of the veneer is good, some areas do show cracking and fading. The speedo was replaced around 15 years ago with a reconditioned item, so the original mileage is sadly unknown. The original toolkit is mostly present, missing only a few items.
Summary:
A handsome car from Rolls-Royce’s golden age which can be either enjoyed and improved or form the basis of a full restoration.
