SUMMARY

A fine example of the second-generation 'Big Healey', superbly restored and classically presented.

DESCRIPTION

The Austin-Healey 3000 is the very epitome of the classic British sports car and one of the very few cars that can be said to have attained classic status whilst still in production. Quite an achievement then, but not an altogether unexpected one considering Austin-Healey's heritage coupled with its achievements in motorsport. Growing more civilised with each new model, the second-generation Healey, the 3000 Mk II (BN7), was introduced in March 1961 with a higher performance camshaft and, initially, a trio of SU HS4 carburettors which turned out to be difficult to balance and were replaced with twin HS6s with the arrival of the BJ7 in January 1962. Known as the Mk IIA, the BJ7 differed by having wind-up windows and a wrap-around windscreen and could be identified externally by a vertical barred front grille. A total of just over 6,000 BJ7s were built.

Offered here is a beautiful 1962 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk IIA that was dispatched from the works on 27th June 1962 destined for sunny California. Returning to the UK in the early ‘90s through the specialist importer, Stevensons Garage in Loughborough, the Healey was converted to right-hand drive and correctly registered. A Heritage Certificate on file confirms that HBJ7L-19945 was supplied new finished in Colorado Red with wire wheels, an overdrive gearbox, heater, adjustable steering column, laminated screen and RS (road speed) tyres. More recently, the engine has been converted to run with modern fuel and fitted with an electric fan. Within the large history file are a wealth of invoices for ongoing maintenance over the years, images of a rotisserie restoration, a drivers handbook, spare set of keys and its current V5C ready for transfer or export. Offered recently serviced and although exempt, with a current MOT valid to 27 November 2023.

Today, the old British classic presents beautifully and is described as 'performing well' with the six-cylinder engine providing decent performance easily keeping up with modern traffic. Is there a better way to enjoy a glorious British summer afternoon than jumping into the Healey and heading off to a nice pub for a homemade sandwich, and if the weather changes, this later Mk IIA features wind-up windows and a proper convertible hood for the journey home.
