DESCRIPTION
The Triumph TR4 was introduced in 1961 to follow its very successful predecessors, the TR2 and TR3. Code named 'Zest' during development the body was given a more modern and updated appearance by Michelotti but its drive train and chassis remained the same using the well proven 4 cylinder pushrod unit, however its capacity was increased from 1991cc to 2138cc. Handling was improved by a three inch wider track and steering was also updated to the more modern and precise rack and pinion system. Internally the car gained wind up windows and the new angular rear end allowed for a boot with a very reasonable luggage capacity for a sports car. Another innovation was the option of an alloy hard top with a removable roof panel that was five years ahead of Porsche's famous 911 Targa . 40235 cars were built between 1961 and 1965 and over the years this car has become one of Triumphs most popular sports cars.
This charming and usable example of the sought-after TR4 is a sensible option for a relative newcomer to the classic car scene being, as it is, in full running order and the subject of significant recent restorative works. It was owned by one gentleman in the US for over 40 years and received its first restoration by him in the 1970's with no deviation from the original specification. Post-restoration the car was used very little, reputedly about 15,000miles, and then was laid up in dry storage for 22 years before being discovered. The bodywork remained in excellent condition, and even the paint was untarnished despite the time spent in storage. To be certain of its mechanical reliability the car was completely checked and serviced before being shipped to the UK. A recent bill totalling close to $4,000 shows that the car received rebuilt carburettors, ignition timing and tune-up as well as new battery, complete new exhaust system, replacement fan belt, coolant flush, brake and clutch fluid flush, wheel bearings and new fuel & water pumps. She now starts and drives without questions being asked. The gear change is accurate and the steering precise. The only slight adjustment which the new owner might choose to make would be to the drivers' door which compared to the other door and body shuts around the car is a few millimetres adrift.
Imported from the USA in September of 2012 but with full EU taxes paid, this car has American title and a full UK MoT to February 2014 making it ready for registration.
