DESCRIPTION

The initial 750 Series Giulietta chassis featured independent front suspension with a coil-sprung live rear axle and drum brakes all round. The engine, like the suspension, owed much to Alfa's racing experience, hence the ability of the twin-cam four cylinder unit to produce 65bhp from just 1,290cc.

Major changes appeared in 1959 with the 101 Series. Though outwardly similar, the 1,290cc engine was strengthened, while the bodies received minor detail alterations. The final change came in 1962 when the renamed Giulia models appeared with five-speed gearboxes and a 92bhp, 1,570cc version of the twin-cam engine.

Built in February 1964 in RHD form, the Alfa Romeo Guilia Spider offered here is number 396 of 404 built. It was delivered to Alfa Romeo (London) Ltd in January 1965.

The car has been built as a road legal competition car and can be adapted to any motor sport discipline. The fundamentals are as original and it has been inspected for the new style HTP(FIA) papers which will be validated from 1st January 2014 for five years.

When purchased by our vendor in 2005 the car was in incomplete condition. Body restoration and paintwork had been carried out previously but it sustained damage to the rear before re-assembly had been started. During the course of the repairs it was found that the restoration was not very thorough, resulting in re-making all the body sill structures to reinstate the corroded parts. The internal parts were made from thicker steel to increase the rigidity of the body. The main shell is as standard, but the doors and boot have aluminium skins so the weight remains much the same. It is fitted with a fibreglass hard top, considerably lighter than the steel original.

The engine fitted is from a later 1.6 Spider due the block being stronger then the earlier engine block. Extensive work has been done to the cylinder head and the engine is fitted with Collumbo & Barianni camshafts and JE forged pistons. It is fitted with a modified Alfetta Sump and oil pump. The 40DCOE carburetors have been totally rebuilt.

The gearbox has been stripped, checked and rebuilt. The clutch is a Fitchell & Sachs unit fitted to a lightened flywheel. The clutch operating mechanism has also been altered to work with the car's original rod linkage. An 8/41 crown wheel and pinion mounted on a new racing limited slip differential has been fitted into the rear axle.

All suspension levers and links are original whilst new front springs and anti roll bars have been fitted. The original rear springs were lowered there are also Chris Robinson rear springs with the car that will be required for rally or tour work. Shock absorbers are by Gaz and are easily adjustable.

A Sparco plumbed in fire extinguisher system is fitted, operated by both inside and outside cables. Two FIA approved (until 2018) red 3" wide seat harnesses are also fitted in the car. At the rear of the car is a foam filled Aluminium fuel tank with filler inside the boot, incorporating inversion valve and a sealed dipstick as there is no petrol gauge.

Wheels & tyres
are alloy replica TZ wheels with Dunlop 500L x 15 tyres. Brakes remain the
standard front calipers. Standard rear brakes including alloy drums with cast in liners.

Overall this car is a great all-round racecar package well prepared and ready to go and that will cater for all your racing needs be it track, road, or rally.
