DESCRIPTION
The Gipsy was the civilian successor to the Austin Champ, and was intended to be a direct rival to the Land Rover. Despite resembling its competitor, the Gipsy was technically significantly different. It was the first vehicle to implement an all-independent suspension using Flexitor rubber torsion units, which produced improved traction and offered the Gipsys occupants more comfort across rugged terrains. The 2199cc engine was inherited from the A70 and had gained itself a good reputation for reliability. The rugged steel body and chassis meant that many examples succumbed to rust and rot; of the vehicles that remain today, it is quite possible that those supplied to the National Fire Service and the like are the survivors that have stood the test of time most successfully.
We are informed by the vendor that this particular Austin Gipsy was first supplied to the Home Office back in 1965, this is believed to be one of the Austin Gipsy's that was stored with the Civil Defence and one that was regularly maintained for more than 30 years before its disposal. Described as a 'timewarp' vehicle with a genuine low mileage of 2,132 miles, when initially sold by the Home Office, this vehicle only had a mileage of 1,600 miles. It was subsequently sold to Duncan Hamilton & Co Ltd at auction in June 1997. Later that year the then owner shipped the vehicle and trailer to America, where it was used as an emergency fire unit for his ranch; fortunately its services were never required, but the Gipsy was kept in good, clean running order. Due to the infrequency of use, in 2012 the decision was made to repatriate CYY 300C back to the UK.
We are informed by the vendor that a new hood has recently been fitted to maintain this vehicles amazing condition, it is supplied with a large history file which contains the V5 registration document, the Commonwealth of Virginia Certificate of Title (which confirms that taxes have been paid), Austin Gipsy Register information, technical data for both the vehicle and fire pump trailer, a photocopy handbook and sales receipts and a current MOT until July of 2014. Tough, characterful and thoroughly enjoyable this very special motor vehicle is guaranteed to turn heads.
