DESCRIPTION
Everyone loves a Tiger Cub
A sought after 1965 example with matching numbers
Recently had a recommission and restoration. Starts and runs well
Lovely colour combination. a veritable 'Baby Bonneville'
The 199cc T20 TRIUMPH TIGER CUB was introduced in March 1954 priced at £127 (a little over half the cost of a new Triumph 6T Thunderbird). It supplemented (and then superseded) the much loved but a tad underpowered 149cc T15 Terrier, the company"s first post-war single.
The T20 Tiger Cub brief was clear and straightforward. It was to be a small bike that filled a gap at the low end of the range but with big pretensions or more realistically, big aspirations. A four-stroke bike that could be an antidote to the fog of British two-strokes belching smoke at every set of traffic lights but, most importantly, a bike that capitalised on the appeal of Triumph"s established muscle machines (the Speed Twin, Tiger 100 and Thunderbird), but with lightweight, commuter—and even boy racer—appeal. Some sixty years later with the benefit of hindsight, there is no doubt it succeeded.
We understand from Tiger Cub aficionados that bikes from 1965 are the ones to have which is exactly what we have here. It has recently had a recommission and restoration which appears to have been carried out to a good standard and is smartly finished in Orange over Cream with a Black frame. In common with most Cubs of the period, things get swapped around. The side panels are missing but that's fairly normal, the headlight unit looks more Sports Cub, and the bars are quite high, possibly US spec or from an SR or SM but, essentially, the frame and engine numbers match,(TC2096989). The bike starts and runs well and the engine is quiet. It has only covered a small milage since the rebuild before sitting in the vendor's heated garage and having little use since. A cracking example of everyone's favourite bike from the early sixties.
