SUMMARY
Incredibly well-restored Velvet Green example of the lesser-spotted, split-window panel van.
DESCRIPTION
The Volkswagen Type 2 was introduced in 1950 as a multi-variant utility vehicle, known as the Transporter, Kombi, Microbus (depending on body type) or Panel Van. It was devised as an evolution of the Volkswagen Type 1, the original Beetle. The first generation of these versatile vehicles (named the T1) were produced with distinctive split-screens (‘splitties’) from 1950 until 1967.
The Type 2's design was simple and functional. The rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout allowed for a spacious cargo area, making it ideal for transporting goods. The flat load floor and square shape of the Panel Van's body made it a practical choice for commercial purposes, as well as two pivot doors. It was particularly popular among small businesses, delivery services, and tradespeople who needed a compact and affordable vehicle to transport their tools and goods. The absence of windows in the cargo area made it a secure and suitable choice for commercial use.
This 1965 T1 Panel Van was a German-delivered car that went out to Scottsdale, Arizona, before being imported to the UK in 2015 prior to a restoration. At the time of discovery, it had been in storage for 35 years and showed only 75,500 miles on the odometer which is believed to be accurate but can’t be warranted. Upon its arrival here, the NOVA was applied for, and the work began. Thankfully the restoration has full photographic evidence from start to finish and the metalwork is incredibly impressive. The van was stripped back to bare metal, with new metal welded in where needed before being primed and later repainted in its original Velvet Green hue. Within the reassuringly full ring-binder history file there is a good summary of work undertaken as well as various invoices for parts and labour from MAC VW in Manchester.
Mechanically the van is very well sorted, fitted with a newer Vege 1,600cc engine that’s covered c.2,000 miles. The engine timing was recently set, tappets adjusted and compressions checked and all appeared to be well. The gearbox and reduction boxes were rebuilt as well as the brakes being refreshed. Since restoration was completed, the van has covered less than 500 miles.
The level of detail paid to the final parts of this van’s restoration are what set it apart from the crowd. The shut lines are remarkable and are highly likely to be better than factory standards with new rubbers fitted all round. The seating and soft furnishings were refurbished but to maintain an element of originality, the dash, bulkhead, steering wheel and clocks are all totally original.
This is an exceptionally good example of an early split-screen panel van. All it needs now is some charming pinstriping/traditional signwriting and it will be a wonderful advertising or marketing tool.
