SUMMARY

Fabulous Giulia TI Super, extensively campaigned in various Historic Race Series, FIA papers and recently fully serviced and thoroughly gone through by The Light Car Company.

DESCRIPTION

The sporting four-door Alfa Romeo Giulia first appeared as the Giulia TI in 1962 with a 1,570cc engine a full six months before the Ford Cortina GT, which would be the Alfa’s main competition in the battle of fast touring cars. It was only built for two production years, with many being converted for race use, so it is very rare for a genuine road car to become available.

Alfa Romeo, knowing that motorsport achievements really did result in better sales, developed a special version of the Giulia, the TI Super, for motorsport use. Compared to the standard car, it was lightened by 90kg with the use of aluminium for the bonnet, boot lid and door skins plus plexiglass rear window. An increase in power, up to 110bhp, was achieved by using the engine from the Giulia Sprint Speciale, still a 1,570cc twin-cam, but breathing through twin Weber 45 DCOE carburettors. The brakes were uprated to discs on all four corners and the wheels were Campagnolo magnesium items, made especially for the TI Super.

According to the Alfa's previous owner, this competition-prepared Giulia TI Super generated around 158bhp and was very competitive with the other Giulias that he raced against. Indeed, he enjoyed considerable success with it, racking up numerous podium finishes in the HRDC. The car was previously owned by Geoff Breakwell and Julius Thurgood and raced with U2TC in the Silverstone Festival (formerly the Silverstone Classic) and the Donington Historic Festival.

During this period, it was looked after by historic specialists, Westbourne Motorsport, and in early 2017, it was treated to a full engine rebuild by specialist Jim Evans at a cost of £8,500 followed by a cylinder-head skim in 2019. Invoices on file from Alfaholics and other specialists total over £8,000, whilst bills from 2016 onwards total around £20,000. Specification highlights include three sets of wheels (one set Alfaholics magnesium lightweight type), FIA-specification roll cage, lightweight polycarbonate windows, Weber 45DCOE-125 carburettors, lightweight baffled alloy fuel tank, Stack rev counter and a bespoke Moto-Lita Alcantara-trimmed three-spoke steering wheel.

The Alfa was purchased by our vendor in July 2023 and since then has been sent to The Light Car Company to tidy up a few minor issues and they kindly provided us with a list of recent work. 'As well as a full service, we rewired a lot of the electrics and tidied under the dash to simplify things. Moved the battery cut off to the transmission tunnel. All coolant hoses were replaced, new brake pads and master cylinder, clean brake and clutch fluid. Replaced extinguisher pull cables and fitted new fire extinguisher for the plumbed-in system. Fit a washer bottle and repaired the windscreen washers. Modified throttle pedal for better position, supplied and fit smaller steering wheel and quick release boss. Removed and stripped rear axle, replaced half-shaft seals, checked tolerances and refit, replaced clutch master cylinder and bled through. Repaired rusty section of floor LH near seat belt anchor. Carried out full four-wheel alignment. Set up for the track.'

It’s supplied with a V5C registration document and FIA HTP Appendix K papers valid until December 2026 making the car eligible for events such as Tour Auto, Modena Cento Ore and, of course, would also be eligible to race at the Goodwood Revival meeting as many other Giulias have done in the past.

We understand that the seat and belts fitted are out of date so will need replacing, but otherwise this is a superbly presented turn-key 1960s Alfa racer that seems very sensibly guided.
