UK-supplied, RHD 230 SL finished in the timeless combination of Silver and Black. 64,195 miles
DESCRIPTION
Upgraded in the early 1990s to the desirable 2.5-litre engine with four-speed automatic transmission
Subject to a full, ground-up, nut and bolt, documented restoration (£100K+) by the world-respected, John Haynes
First owner for 17 years. Comprehensive history folder with lots of photos of the restoration
One of the nicest we have ever seen. Classic Mercedes-Benz ownership gets no better than this
The second generation of the SL series began with the 230 of 1963. Designed by Paul Bracq, its wonderfully crisp styling clothed a monocoque chassis equipped with all-round independent suspension, power assisted disc/drum brakes, recirculating ball steering and a 2306cc straight-six engine of 150bhp and 145 lb-ft of torque mated to either a four-speed manual or automatic transmission. Of the 48,912 W113 Series cars made between 1963 and 1971, 19,831 were 230SLs.
Registered two months before what would be a World Cup football final never to forget, this outstanding 230 SL represents an opportunity to own not just an iconic luxury coupe/roadster of the 1970s, but an example that has been restored to incredibly high standards. This remarkable level of finish is only possible when a dedicated team of Mercedes-Benz specialists work in harmony together to hand finish every last detail.
In the spring of 1966 this, at the time very expensive, little roadster was delivered to its proud first owner in London, and it must have suited well as he was to retain it for the next 17 years. In the early 1990s, the engine was replaced by the far more flexible 2.5 unit, a common period modification which offered superior performance and was a very desirable upgrade.
On offer from long-term ownership, this car is ready to be enjoyed, and its new custodian will have the opportunity to re-live the experience of taking delivery of what is essentially a brand new 230 SL. A full ground-up, nut-and-bolt restoration has been completed, by the world-respected John Haynes, with every single piece of this motor car painstakingly refurbished or replaced if necessary. We understand that the account for the work totalled over £100,000 and we can see where that went. Obviously, it's not possible to describe a 52-year old car as 'flawless' but we are struggling to find a better word.
A full photographic documented account can be found in the history file along with the original handbooks, period dealership brochures, and a vast array of associated paperwork. You will also find a detailed account of the cars ownership history, a current V5c, and bundles of old MOTs. The cost of the restoration alone far surpasses the upper estimate for this stunning Pagoda, finished in timeless and classical two-tone Silver and Black with a black leather interior and black soft top.
Now very sought after, UK-supplied, right-hand drive 230 SLs rarely come to market and we invite any inspection of this lovely Mercedes to see just what is possible when someone knows what they are doing.
