Replacing the pretty 101 Giulia Spider was always going to be a tough task, but Battista 'Pinin' Farinas swansong design captured the publics heart when Alfa Romeo unveiled the “Duetto” at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1966. The name Duetto was the result of a marketing competition to name their new Spider and was never officially adopted because of a trademark issue, however, it appears to have stuck and is in common use to this day. Alfa Romeos iconic convertible design was so successful, its production (admittedly along with some questionable styling changes) continued for over three decades and was immortalised in the 1968 Mike Nichols film “The Graduate”, starring alongside Dustin Hoffman and the beautiful Katherine Ross and the ensuing drama established the film and the vehicle as inseparable in our collective conscience.
The Spider 1300 Junior was introduced in June 1968 so this particular, very rare, right-hand drive example must have been amongst the first UK supplied cars, as it was sold to its first owner in London on the 1st August 1968. Finished in Bianco Spino paintwork with a Skai Nero interior it must have generated lots of admiring glances whizzing around central London in the Summer of '68.
The owner, before our private vendor, carried out much work on this special car over his 11 years of caring ownership. Such was the quality of his work and his attention to detail, that he felt able to show the car at many high profile events, attracting much attention and appreciation. Indeed, this very pretty spider has won many awards including the Alfa Romeo Owners Club Concours class winner in 2009 and 2012. The ultimate honour and reward came in 2015 when the little Alfa basked in the glory of being awarded the Overall Winner at that years AROC Concours d'Elegance. As you would expect with such a pedigree, this 1300 is a joy to behold and will reward any inspection. The vendor informs us there is a great history file accompanying the car, including Alfa Romeo authentication, restoration pictures, invoices and details of work carried out over past 35 years.
Now ready for a new proud owner, this car looks to offer the whole package - a rare, right-hand drive 1300 Spider with a proven pedigree, in fantastic condition, and ready for some top-down fun.
