DESCRIPTION
We are informed by the vendor that this genuine 440 RT is a complete matching numbers car and is absolutely original right down to its factory build spec sheet recently found under the carpets (see picture). It is a genuine two owner vehicle that comes with various dealer documentation making this a very special discovery. Its original data tag is still visible under the bonnet which clearly matches all factory paperwork that comes with this car. A Texas car from new this car has sat dormant in storage in the United States for just over a quarter of a century unknown to the world outside (see picture). We are informed that the original 440 Magnum engine was turned over regularly and as a result remains in superb original fettle, likewise due to the Texan climate the metalwork on this car is in very sound and solid condition.
The colour and options are exactly as it left the factory. B5 Blue metallic, white top and rear transverse stripe, bucket seats with wood grain centre console, rare factory air conditioning and body belt moulding. It also has deluxe seatbelts, hood fender mounted turn signals and AM radio. Imported into the UK last year the car was then subject to a re commissioning programme without destroying its amazing originality. During the re-commissioning the engine was found to be in particularly good order with excellent oil pressure, likewise the transmission, brakes and suspension were all found to be in excellent order.
The car comes with around £4000 of new parts including items already installed such as disc brakes, new fuel tank and lines, fuel pump, Edlebrock 750 CFM carburettor (the original Carter Carb has been rebuilt and comes with the car) and new steel wheels and tyres. Other new items included in the sale, but not fitted, include new carpets, new seat upholstery, vinyl roof and transverse stripe.
Mechanically re-commissioned and with a new MOT and UK road tax, the Dodge 440RT has a unique story to tell, it is said that Steve McQueen was constantly frustrated by the RTs spectacular performance as he practised 100 mph side by side routines for the highway chase in the making of the legendary film Bullitt, there are even rumours that two plug leads were pulled off to slow the thing down. Alas, we will never know, cars such as this one rarely come to auction and as such we expect a huge amount of interest from all four corners of the globe.
