SUMMARY

Recently completed, no-expense spared restoration and it shows.

DESCRIPTION

  • With the Mk 2, the rear suspension was re-engineered to use reversed lower wishbones and Rotoflex driveshaft couplings, revolutionising the Mk 1's somewhat wayward handling
  • Family owned from new being purchased from Otterspool Motors, Liverpool in November 1969
  • The first owner, Jack Coburn Witherop, was a landscape painter of some repute exhibiting at The National Gallery, The Royal Academy as well as further afield in America and South Africa
  • Recent exhaustive restoration by Specialised Automotive Services (SAS) of Sabden in Lancashire whose portfolio covers Aston Martin, Lamborghini and Ferrari through to repainting current McLaren supercars
  • The rebuild was carried out between 2008 and 2016 with final finishes and adjustments completed in 2018 and 2019. Rebuild costs amount to some £97,000 !!!
  • There will be few, if any other GT6s anywhere in the world that have such provenance, pedigree and a rebuild of such quality.

This stunning GT6 Mk 2, splendidly presented in Damson, was bought new by Jack Coburn Witherop on 27th Nov 1969 from Otterspool Motors, Liverpool, who were Standard Triumph Dealers at the time and, incredibly, remains within the same family to this very day. Jack Coburn Witherop was a landscape painter of some repute, exhibiting at the National Gallery and the Royal Academy, and the Triumph was his pride and joy being pressed into service on a regular basis and maintained regardless of cost until ill health curtailed his driving days. At that point, the car  was passed onto his brother, Arthur, in 1980, who in turn bequeathed it  to his grandson, the present owner, in January 1991.

Due to financial constraints and pressures of work as a young oral surgeon, the car was stored until family time and resources were sufficient to justify a complete restoration.  Commencing in 2008 in the hands of Dave Warburton, Specialised Automotive Services (SAS)  Sabden, Lancashire, a prolonged no-expense-spared rebuild followed, ‘’If it was going to be done, it was to be done right’’ and indeed some eight years later there was light at the end of the tunnel with this breathtaking GT6 emerging as it stands today. Invoices provide an insight into circa £97,000 of expenditure and what must surely be one of the finest examples to exist today. Completed to the very highest of standards from the acid dipped chassis to the balanced engine with fast road cam, to stainless manifold and exhaust, rebuilt gearbox, uprated cooling system, poly-bushed suspension, high torque starter and alternator, the list goes on. For safety a bolt-in roll cage was added along side period style Corbeau seats, however, with the original seats remaining with the car, these additions can be very easily be reversed. A simply remarkable example of an increasingly rare Triumph and absolutely fit for any collection world wide
