DESCRIPTION
Alfa Romeo was one of the first manufacturers to put a powerful engine in a lightweight car for mainstream production. The Junior was equipped with an alloy twin overhead camshaft four-cylinder engine, similar to that of the earlier Giulietta models range. When first released, the offered engine capacities were 1290cc, along with various configurations of carburettors and tuning produced power outputs from about 80 to about 110bhp. Almost all Juniors made had a 5-speed manual transmission. The 1300 Junior was noted for its lively performance among sedans of that era, especially considering the modest engine size and that their performance was better than many sports cars of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
This exceptional right-hand drive step-front 1300 GT Junior is finished in Arancio (AR/134) with black interior trim. The car is described by the vendor as "completely original and has never been welded. With all factory spot welds present and in immaculate condition." Reading a little over 30,000 miles and with 1 previous owner from new, the vendor assures us this mileage is genuine and we believed any inspection of the vehicle would lead to a similar conclusion. The shut lines are superb and the car is believed to have been painted just once. Discovered as part of a large South African collection, this little Alfa will be supplied with a fresh MoT certificate but will require its next owner to register the car in Europe. All European taxes and duties have been paid by the vendor.
Alfa Romeos are very hard to find in dry, unrestored condition. However, it is clear to us that the South African climate has been very kind to this vehicle. We urge any Alfa enthusiast to inspect this step-front, as we believe it to be a very special little car.
