SUMMARY
A distinctive and nicely-improved B GT suitable for both fast road use and MGOC competition.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
The MGB was launched in 1962 by the British Motor Corporation as a small, fun, and communicative rear-wheel-drive sports car before the introduction of the fixed-roof ‘GT’ model in October 1965.
The car:
It’s an original, UK-supplied, right-hand drive example that is believed to have been factory-finished in orange before being changed to Old English White in the 2012 during the restoration. Both front and rear bumpers have been removed and MGOC Sebring valances fitted, creating better airflow over the car and cooling for the front brakes (larger ventilated front disc brakes and larger rear drums are fitted with servo assistance), along with Le Mans style Perspex headlamp stone guards. This little MG now presents itself as a good usable classic, though some wear to the bodywork can be seen.
Purchased by its previous owner in August 2012 and the work on fully restoring SWC 247M began. The restoration finished in early 2015 and in November 2015 it was decided to convert this delightful little MGB into a road race/rally/hill climb sprint vehicle to MGOC specification. The conversion was completed in May 2017 and the car has only covered 2,000 miles since.
Work includes the fitting of an integrated Roll cage with TRS 4-point harness for the driver, front and rear tow brackets. A Battery isolator switch was also installed in the dashboard, along with electronic ignition installation and starter button being added. Since converting the vehicle, it now sits on 15-inch MGB alloy wheels wrapped with Goodyear Tyres.
It still retains its standard 1.8-litre engine (1,798cc), which has been bored out +0.030” (to approx. 1840cc) with new pistons and rings installed, an approved Qparts Stage 2 Camshaft kit fitted along with cylinder head modified to Stage 2 with big valves. It has a stainless steel exhaust, GAZ adjustable telescopic shock absorbers front and rear with Parabolic rear springs together with an MGOC-approved Panhard Rod, a new radiator and a thermostatic Kenlowe fan.
In October 2023 it was sent to be set up with Peter Burgess the renowned MGB specialist in Derbyshire. It had new head work, the carbs and timing set up, it had an new MGB K&N Filter Kit fitted and it was converted to run on unleaded fuel at the cost of £1500. It has also recently had a new starter motor and can be described as on the button.
Supplied with a file full of receipts for work carried out over the years, along with a memory card showing images of both the restoration and conversion work, spare wheels and additional seat. The vehicle - although tax and MOT exempt - has also just been MOT’d (August 2024), giving peace of mind to its new owner.
Described by the current owner as ‘being a very solid well sorted example, and a pleasure to drive easily keeping up and often surprising modern traffic with extra power from that important overdrive. Easily cruises at 70mph’. The owner is only selling as has the chance to buy his dream car from the 80’s, a Lotus Esprit Turbo.
Summary:
With all the work complete, this fabulous little MG could well be a great first entry into the world of club motorsport or simply enjoyed as a fun road car
