SUMMARY

A charming Italian ambulance, awakened from its slumbers and perfectly presented to take to the roads, turning heads with its period charm. You’re unlikely to see another.

DESCRIPTION

Background:

The Fiat 238 van was introduced in 1967. Its 1,438cc engine and 4-speed manual gearbox drive the front wheels, giving it a low flat rear floor, which allowed Fiat to produce a multitude of body styles, making it one of the most popular vans of its time in its native Italy. In fact, it was so popular that the introduction of the 242, its intended replacement, in 1974 didn’t dent sales one bit, giving the 238 a stay of execution until 1983.

Despite their sales success, very few are left on the UK (or Italian) roads today, as they rusted for fun. This rare survivor represents a real opportunity to own something about as far from the run-of-the-mill classic as it’s possible to get.

The car:

Purchased new by the Italian Ambulance Service in 1974, based in Macerata, a very quiet Italian village, it saw very little use over its front-line service. Gradually superseded by newer models, it must have wormed its way into their affections, as it remained tucked away in a quiet corner of the station for years. By the time it emerged from hibernation in 2015, less than 7,000km had passed beneath its wheels over four decades.

This rare survivor was imported into the UK in 2016 before embarking on a thorough recommissioning. While the gentle Italian climate – and long term covered storage - left the bodywork in remarkably good condition, with the paintwork being largely original, the mechanical components needed bringing back to life. Renowned restorers Sussex Sports Cars went about the work, refurbishing and replacing parts as necessary.

The van has been completely rebuilt mechanically. It has been adapted for unleaded fuel and has all the basics for self-sufficiency on the road, but has been kept as original as possible. The stretcher in the back had to be removed and two back seats taken out. The paintwork is believed to be original apart from a few touch ups where the paint had cracked. The blue flashing lights have been replaced with clear lenses, though the original blue ones will be supplied for ‘show demonstrations’.

The interior has been kept pretty much as it was, the Dymo labelling in the cab has been translated into English, the cupboards now have battery interior lights, the floor is hardwearing wood, and all the seats have been re-covered in soft Italian leather to keep it authentic.

Some modern creature comforts such as cigar lighter sockets, a USB port and a period working radio have been added. It has also wired for a leisure battery. A specially made protection cover comes with it as well.

All 238s were fitted with the 1,438cc engine, which generally produced c.45bhp but the ambulance variants were fitted with a higher output 51bhp engine, allowing faster response times, even fully kitted out and laden with paramedics and a patient.

Fully registered in the UK with the age-appropriate number, CDM 669M, this delightful van is supplied with numerous amounts of paperwork documenting its restoration, as well as the original owners handbook and some paperwork from its time in Italy, as well as custom-made van cover.

Summary:

What is not to like about this charming little Fiat? As a small camper, a classic race support vehicle, or just a fun little weekend gad-about, it takes some beating and will stand out from the crowd wherever it goes. This rare opportunity isn’t to be missed.
