SUMMARY

Excitingly offered without reserve, no other car combines Italian style, American V8 muscle and British craftsmanship in such a compelling manner.

DESCRIPTION

Please see a video of the Jensen at the bottom of this listing.

Background:

Some marques will always be defined by one model. For AC Cars it’s the Cobra, for Jensen Motors it’s the Interceptor. And both share a common thread – a British car with prodigious American muscle.

Jensen launched what became their last GT in 1966, featuring a stunningly modern yet stylish and elegant body, designed by Touring of Italy and initially built by Vignale in Turin, before Jensen took production wholly in-house in West Bromwich.

Motive power came via Chrysler’s 6.2-litre 383cu in V8, which was replaced by the same firm’s 305hp 440cu in V8 (7.2-litres) from 1971 onwards, in the MkIII Interceptors. Most were specified with a Torqueflite automatic transmission, driving through a limited-slip differential and a conventional rear axle, perfect for riding the tsunami of torque from the monster V8.

The ability to cover huge distances in considerable luxury was the Interceptor’s strong suit, as befits a Grand Tourer. Such nicities as electric windows, reclining front seats, power steering and air conditioning came as standard and combining the handsome looks of the elegant Italian body and huge glasshouse with the relentless turbine-smooth power, it became a timeless classic almost overnight.

The Interceptor is as capable of turning heads today as it was in the 'Swinging Sixties' – and as capable of sweeping its occupants to their destination in an unflustered state. It remains the kind of car you’d turn back to take another look at, at the end of any journey.

The car:

Interceptor chassis number 2240/9766 was built in May 1974 at Jensen’s Kelvin Way Works and this UK-supplied right-hand drive III has been treated to an impressive number of refurbishments and upgrades over its lifetime, making it a standout example in its class. It left the works in Cerise but in June 2017 underwent a comprehensive repaint in dark blue, resulting in a finish that exudes elegance and timeless appeal. It has a contrasting tan interior.

During the same period a meticulous mechanical overhaul was undertaken by marque specialists, Cropredy Bridge Cars, where various components were replaced or refurbished, including bushes, ball joints, bearings and steering rack. Several notable upgrades have been incorporated including an upgraded starter motor and uprated cooling system with high capacity fans. An Edelbrock carburettor mounted on an aluminium inlet manifold further contributes to the car’s improved efficiency and power delivery.

17" wheels add a touch of modernity while maintaining the classic aesthetic and a new Mota Lita leather steering wheel plus a period stereo system enhance the comfort and enjoyment of driving.

Having been refurbished in 2017, the car would now benefit from refurbishment to the body, engine and interior to restore it to its full glory.

Summary:

With no reserve set, this elegant Interceptor represents great value – usable as it stands and with scope for improvement.
