SUMMARY

Lightweight, achingly good looking, a glorious engine and that unique Alfa Romeo charisma, this truly is a driver’s choice.

DESCRIPTION

Few marques evoke the romantic spirit of Italian motoring quite like Alfa Romeo. Synonymous with style, flamboyance and motorsport success, Alfa Romeo’s legacy has always been one of passion and style over pragmatism and order.

The 2000 GT Veloce (2000 GTV) was officially released in 1971, as the final and most powerful evolution of the Tipo 105 coupé line, beginning with the Giulia Sprint GT in 1963. Produced at Alfa Romeo’s Arese plant, the 2000 GTV replaced the outgoing 1750 GTV and featured several updates including a larger 1,962cc twin-cam inline-four engine producing around 130bhp, as well as interior refinements and minor exterior changes like revised grille detailing and badges. The 2000 GT Veloce perfectly marries racing pedigree with everyday driveability, wrapped in a body designed by one of Italy’s finest designers, Giorgetto Giugiaro.

The 2000 GTV offered here is not only phenomenally good looking, but mechanically on point having been enhanced with a plethora of upgrades in recent years. Built by Alfa Romeo guru, Bob Wright of Alfapanels, this car features lightweight fibreglass body panels, a 'Step front' conversion and a host of mechanical upgrades to bring it up to 'fast road' specification. The car was reportedly one of six cars Bob built, given the moniker GTAp, inspired by the race-prepared GTA variants of the era. The original engine had failed so a period correct twin-cam 2-litre replacement engine is fitted along with a 5-speed gearbox, both subjected to rebuilds prior to installation.

Mechanically, the list of work carried out is both comprehensive and reassuring. In addition to the overhauled drivetrain, recent servicing included fresh oil, filters and air intakes. Other renewed components include the carburettors, water pump, exhaust, fuel system, brake and fuel lines, starter motor, mirrors, headlights and more, ensuring the car is as ready for spirited backroad blasts as it is for embracing admiring glances at any classic car gathering.

Aesthetically, the car presents very well. Originally delivered in blue, this GTV was resprayed and finished in Rosso Alfa over a black vinyl interior, complemented with brand new Alfaholics aluminium 7x15" GTA Veloce wheels and tyres. A single headlight front-end conversion, deleted bumpers and discreet fibreglass enhancements including the bonnet, grille surround and even the outer body panels all assist in giving it a period correct yet enhanced look. If the devil is in the detail, then the GTA-style door handles and buttons and MOMO steering wheel further underline its racing inspiration. The pink corner is a simple wrap, paying homage to original racing Alfa Romeo liveries, which can easily be removed if a pure red car is preferred.

The interior and seats have been retrimmed in black, punctuated by an off-white headliner and a minimalistic dashboard design. The original speedometer was replaced shortly after its last MOT in June 2024. As part of the build process the chassis and metalwork received welding where needed before the underside was Raptor-coated for long-term preservation.

The history file makes for very pleasant reading with over 44 pages of receipts purely from Classic Alfa for parts included in the build of the car.

This 2000 GT Veloce encapsulates everything we adore about Alfa Romeo with its timeless style, free-revving engine and theatrics that few marques can replicate. Tastefully upgraded and very well presented, this example offers its next custodian the opportunity to experience the romance of an Italian classic, reimagined for modern roads.
