SUMMARY
A rare, desirable, unrestored and delightfully original 308 GTB Vetroresina, with a comprehensive and full service history.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
Ferrari’s 308 GTB was debuted at the Paris Motor Show in 1975, replacing the 246 Dino in Ferrari’s model line-up. Sharper edged than the Dino, the 308 was greeted rapturously by media and prospective owners alike and not just because of its handsome, modern looks. The design is the work of Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti, whose resumé includes such classics as the Daytona, Dino and Berlinetta Boxer, echoes of which can be seen in the 308 – still one of Ferrari’s greatest shapes.
Built around a tube-frame chassis with separate body, the 308 featured a 252hp 3-litre 90-degree dry-sumped DOHC V8, running on quad Webers, mounted transversally and mated to a 5-speed transaxle with limited-slip differential. Full independent suspension was fitted all round, with four-wheel disc brakes and unassisted rack-and-pinion steering.
The early Scaglietti-built cars broke new ground for Ferrari, being manufactured in glass-reinforced plastic, allowing a very light weight of 1,050kg. Only 808 of these GRP machines - ‘Veteroresina’ is the Italian for fibreglass - were built before steel bodywork was introduced in June 1977, adding a full 150kg to the weight of the car and all were GTBs, making them the rarest of 308s.
The car:
This outstanding UK-market 308 GTB Vetroresina was built on 27th July 1976 and supplied new by Cooper Car (Sales) Ltd via Maranello Concessionaires, being delivered to its first customer, Mr Peter Cocks on 5th February 1977, one of only 154 RHD fibreglass examples.
Presenting superbly in Rosso Chiaro with black leather interior and red carpets, and sitting superbly on original 5-spoke alloys, this is a magnificently original example of the rare and desirable fibreglass-bodied Berlinetta, having covered just 88,000 miles.
It comes with its original factory books including the all important service book/warranty card, Schedoni leather wallet, two keys, toolkit emergency light with pouch, spare wheel, car covers and even the very rare - and now difficult to source - original four-piece Schedoni luggage set.
What sets it apart from its peers, however, is its staggering history file. For a 47-year-old car to have such a full and exhaustingly comprehensive service history is almost unheard of but this 308 has a paper trail the like of which few will amass. Including services, MOT’s, parts, storage bills and more, there is a total of 164 invoices, even including the original purchase invoice and delivery notes for the car from Maranello Concessionaires.
Also included are the V5 documents from the previous owners (the most recent of the five maintained the car in his keeping for 16 years) and historic MOT Certificates. There is even a diary produced by one of the owners, outlining all of the events and club meetings the car has attended. One of the documents from 2015 was a valuation of the car from Mike and Graham Reeder Performance and Specialist Cars, which saw it valued at £180,000.
Serviced extensively in its lifetime, it last underwent some maintenance on 19th January 2023 by T.T. Motors Racing Ltd. The work included an annual service and MOT, new battery fitted, oil leak between engine and gearbox fixed, change of engine oil and filter, drained and renewed gearbox oil, changed fuel filter and the spark plugs replaced. A total of £15,574.14 has been spent on the car in the last four years and more information on this maintenance can be provided upon request.
Summary:
This is a real gem of a car, very much cherished and an absolute credit to all its previous owners, presented in very original unrestored condition and represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire such a very good example with an equally excellent history file.
