SUMMARY

A rare and sought after right-hand drive UK 3-litre Carrera Sport model with long family ownership - lots of potential!

DESCRIPTION

Introduced in September 1975 for the 1976 model year with production only running until 1977, the interesting Carrera 3.0 is rightly regarded as somewhat of a special and rare model amongst the impact-bumper era, 911 model range.

Following on after the MFI-engined Carrera 2.7, the 3.0 Carrera heralded the adoption of the newly developed Bosch K-Jetronic CIS fuel-injection engine. This torque-rich, smooth and free-revving 3-litre engine, with a distinctive ‘cam' effect from 4,000rpm, produced 200bhp and was effectively a naturally aspirated version of the 930 Turbo's drivetrain.

During its short two year life span, only 3,687 cars were built - a tiny amount compared to nearly 58,000 911 SCs and 76,500 3.2 Carreras produced. Of these, 2,564 were Coupés and 1,123 were Targas with only around 1,064 Coupés being manufactured in right-hand drive. Very few right-hand drive cars reached the UK and with just a two-year production run, only 121 Carrera 3.0 Coupés are verified by their chassis numbers with Porsche Club GB - of which this is one.

The car presented here is a 1977 Porsche 911 3.0 Carrera Sport Coupé in distinctive 'Platindiamant' (or Platinum Diamond, colour code 944) paintwork, over a tan and tartan interior with original Recaro sports seats. It's a UK-supplied, 5-speed, matching-numbers car and, typically for a UK car, it's a Sport model with wings, 16in Fuchs wheels, and a sunroof.

This striking sports-car was originally supplied on 7th February 1977 via Official Porsche Centre Parker & Parker Ltd of Longpool, Kendal in Cumbria, and sold to a customer in Blackburn. It then passed through a few owners, before being bought in October 1982 by Mr Edwards of Pockley, York; he subsequently sold it, in September 1983, to our vendor’s father (but registered the car in his wife’s name); remarkably, it has been in the care of his family ever since (ownership passing to our vendor in 2014). By 2013 and due in part to the father’s declining health, the car had slumbered for several years in the garage of the family home. It an attempt to get the car ‘back on its feet’, father and son instructed Porsche specialists, Gantspeed Engineering Ltd, to carry out an extensive mechanical refurbishment. This included an engine rebuild (which retains its distinctive 5-blade cooling fan, as opposed to the newer 11-blade version), transmission overhaul and other work, totalling some £35,000 (invoices in file). The car was driven and enjoyed after being run-in but, due to other commitments, it ended up back in the garage, where it again has sat unused for a number of years. Whilst being worked on, the sills, floors and kidney bowls were all inspected and deemed in good shape, but the paintwork (believed to be original) is in need of some TLC, plus some areas of the trim likewise (the missing Porsche bonnet badge does come with the car though).

With much originality throughout, the factory interior has held up especially well, indeed, with a bit of attention and expenditure, this could quite easily be a top-top 3.0, with long diligent ownership, much paperwork and its original book pack (mislaid at the time of writing) to accompany it.

As one of the rarest UK-market production Porsches, this wholesome example represents good value against the 930 Turbo and is the smart choice for those who respect history, rarity and originality.
