SUMMARY
A matching numbers Yamaha XT500 with low mileage, looking for an owner to give it the use it was designed for.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
Yamaha launched the XT range in 1976, with the big XT500 four-stroke twin-valve single. It was an instant success, buyers drawn to its Enduro styling and dual-purpose handling characteristics, which made it eminently suitable for both on and off-road use.
Competition success for the XT certainly helped boost sales. The bikes won the first big African rallies like the Paris-Abidjan-Nice and the Paris-Dakar, which were growing in popularity on the late 1970s. Success in the 1977 500cc Motocross World Championship helped to showcase the XT’s performance and versatility, even if the off-road racers bore only visual similarity to the showroom versions.
In 1981 the XT’s original engine was replaced with a four-valve version, laying the groundwork for the hugely-successful XT range that followed – with 62,000 XTs sold from 1976 to 1990 in France alone.
The bike:
This 1985 example is a matching-numbers European import, registered in the UK in 2021.
It is all original and on the button, with a fresh battery and a current MOT. It has covered a mere 20,186km (just 12,515 miles) from new and is looking for a new enthusiast owner to give it the exercise it needs.
Summary:
Yamaha’s love of the big thumpers of the 1960s led to the creation of the XT. Yes, there are other trail bikes but do they compare to this beauty?
