Originally registered in 1987, this BMW M3 (E30) has had a long-standing history of competition, and was believed to be a circuit racer during the 1990s with its former owners. A genuine M3 shell with the correct - but highly fettled - S14 engine, it was built in its current form as a tarmac rally car during the early 2000s by Gordon Spooner Engineering (GSE) for the then-owner, Ian James, who is believed to have been an officer with the Metropolitan Police.
It was set-up using the same suspension geometry settings, and using the same jigs, as the successful Prodrive cars and was completed in 2002, going on to compete in numerous tarmac rallies in both the UK and Belgium, with Ian James' final event in 2010. The car was then sold to its next owner, A.Tejpar, in 2018 and, apparently, only managed one outing, the Ypres Rally, following an engine rebuild earlier in the year.
Since having come into the care of the current owner around nine months ago, the car has been dry-stored throughout this period. It was treated to a minor cosmetic ‘touch up’ in the form of a full set of period-correct decals being applied, along with a set of brand-new Speedline wheels.
Built and maintained to an incredibly high specification;
- Highly-tuned 2.3-litre S14 engine, featuring competition valve springs, carbon intake manifold, 308 inlet camshaft, Group A fuel pump, Group A main bearings and more, with a total power output of around 280bhp at the flywheel
- Six-speed Quaife sequential transmission with an Alcon twin-plate clutch and a plated differential.
- Welded cage by Custom Cages with a certificate for motorsport use.
- FIA-approved harnesses, seats and fire suppression system, all of which have numerous years left of approval and the fire system having been recently refurbished.
- Aluminium bag tank. In-date until 2023.
- Ohlins dampers on all four corners
- AP Racing brakes
- Differential oil cooler and pump
- Composite boot and bonnet for weight reduction.
- Perspex windows
- Stack dashboard
- Fully-stripped interior
The engine has been rebuilt numerous times, in 2008, 2010 and most recently in 2018, although there is no invoice for the latter, though documentation does show the engine being sent off by Rally World for rebuilding
As the car has not been used in anger during our vendor’s ownership, it remains in excellent, if used, condition, with the sort of marks expected from a bona-fide, proven competition vehicle. Ready for its next owner, this 1987 BMW M3 Rally car is a rare find, with in-date FIA approval and no reported requirement for any mechanical or aesthetic attention. Simply get in and go.
Included with the vehicle is a valid MSA Group 'A' logbook, numerous invoices, a rich and detailed history folder, a spare differential, 16-20 wheels, a bonnet-mounted light pod and the ‘EDZ’ private plate, which pays homage to the original Prodrive E30 cars.
A wonderful opportunity not to be missed by any Rally enthusiasts or drivers, professionals or amateurs alike!
