When Ferrari introduced the Testarossa in Paris in 1984, it was regarded as possibly the best car they had ever built but, whilst the design was spectacular, it was not considered to be as sensually beautiful as numerous GT Ferraris of the past. As a complete departure, Pininfarina had designed a modern, aerodynamic and efficient body shape, immediately recognisable by its very distinctive side 'strakes' unlike anything else seen in the post-war period. The name 'Testarossa', literally Redhead, became synonymous with Ferrari sports racing cars in the "50s and "60s and was resurrected at the launch of this new model at the Porte de Versailles in 1984.
The Testarossa was the "poster car" of the 1980"s, being perhaps the ultimate automotive status symbol to emerge from the "greed is good" decade. The Testarossa"s imposing size and in-your-face attitude tend to hide the fact that here we have a remarkably user-friendly supercar; mighty performance delivered in a smooth manner by a sweet and free-revving 4.9-litre flat-12 producing 390bhp, endowing the car with a respectable 0-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 196mph. The Testarossa really does offer a rare package of serious performance, practicality, and reasonable comfort and its confidence-inspiring handling at high speed becomes almost addictive. It even has windows you can actually see out of!
Although the design may have seemed to be 'of the moment', the Testarossa proved itself to be a well-built and enduring car, with the passing of time proving Pininfarina's design to be durable, timeless and much echoed in design language for numerous products over the years.
The Testarossa was produced between 1984 and 1992, with some 7,177 examples in total, and was Ferrari"s most successful model ever - perhaps one of the reasons why it remains comparatively good value for money - but for how long? Remember the UK received just 438 RHD examples….
Offered here is a UK-supplied, right-hand drive Ferrari Testarossa "Monodado" which was delivered through Modena and first registered on 20th May 1987. Finished in Rosso Corsa over Crema, this car has been used sparingly by its five former keepers. The service book records the following:
Date Mileage Dealer
June 1987 1,492 Modena Ferrari
December 1987 3,666 Modena Ferrari
Small service post "87 5,672 Modena Ferrari
October 1995 9,446 Carrera Sport
September 1998 10,850 Hargreaves Racing
August 1999 11,312 Hargreaves Racing
October 2001 12,500 Hargreaves Racing
October 2004 14,504 Rosso Corsa
August 2012 16,857 Ferrari Lancaster Colchester
January 2015 16,989 Ferrari Lancaster Colchester
February 2016 17,077 Ferrari Lancaster Colchester
October 2017 17,188 Ferrari Lancaster Colchester
The last service in October 2017 included fresh cambelts. The car is accompanied by a UK V5c, its service book, some old MoT Certificates, its tools and jack. This Testarossa has now covered just 17,255 miles and is a great early example of one of the finest supercars from the 1980s.
