SUMMARY
An elegant and well maintained two-owner R107 300SL which will be as comfortable whisking you to you to Juan-Les-Pins or the supermarket.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
The Mercedes-Benz R107 SL range debuted in 1971 and manufacture continued until 1989, a life of 18 years, which makes it the second-longest-lived of all Mercedes models, after the G-Wagon. Few cars are as emblematic of the marque, offering as it does a combination of comfortable cruising and rock-solid build quality and reliability.
With more than 300,000 built, the SL is one of the world’s most successful convertibles, despite its price point. With over 204,000 of those cars being sold in the US alone, it was also a huge profit-centre for Mercedes.
The SL was a strict two-seat convertible/roadster which came with a standard soft-top and optional hard-top for winter use. With engines ranging from 2.8-litre straight sixes to 5.6-litre V8s (all fuel-injected), there was an SL for all tastes and almost all came with automatic transmissions, fitting its positioning as a comfortable boulavardier, rather than an outright sportscar.
Quick enough, comfortable, quietly stylish and with impeccable build standards, the SL could easily be regarded as the model that defines Mercedes for so many and its popularity remains as strong as ever.
The car:
This UK-supplied, right-hand-drive Impala Brown example has had just two owners, both of whom have clearly used the SL as was intended, as it has accrued almost 96,000 miles during its 36 years. As that averages out to a little over 2,500 per annum, it’s probably safe to assume that it has been used for high days and holidays, rather than as a daily smoker.
This handsome 3.0-litre straight six-engined example was specified from new with cruise control, Behr air-conditioning and electric windows and has benefitted from a recent refurbish of its mushroom-coloured leather interior, which is in fine condition. There is an after-market Sony CD stereo unit fitted. There is some cracking of the dash-top – as is common in the R107 – and there is some minor damage around the glovebox and gear-selector quadrant, but these issues are well-understood and parts for rectification are readily available – not least from Mercedes themselves. It sports a good soft-top and comes with a tool kit, first aid kit and the original factory hard-top – always a highly desirable extra!
The metallic paint finish is good and may be relatively recent, given the lack of stone chips, and the panels look to be in very good condition. A new sump was fitted in 2002 which necessitated the removal of the engine, allowing inspection of the bulkhead and subframe. In the same year, the SL received electrical attention and a new exhaust, as well as around £900-worth of cosmetic improvements. This handsome roadster sits four-square on its original-spec alloy wheels and the brightwork and exterior fitments are all in good shape.
The vendor reports that the car drives as should be expected from a well-preserved and maintained SL, with no untoward noises and there is good history dating back to the early 2000s, documenting the expenditure and attention that’s been lavished on the car.
Summary:
This well-looked-after example of Mercedes’ great boulevardier should happily provide reliable, comfortable and stylish service for decades to come.
