SUMMARY

Perhaps the best preserved and most original 911 3.2 Carrera available, this is a high-level, collector-grade Porsche, and quite possibly unrepeatable.

DESCRIPTION

Porsche revived the Carrera name, previously used for the competition orientated versions of the preceding 356 model, for its luxuriously equipped, top-of-the-range 911 in 1973, applying the evocative title to all 911 variants, co-incidentally with the introduction of the 3.2-litre engine, from the start of the 1984 model year. Although it remained an air-cooled ‘flat six’, the ‘3.2’ engine was 80% new and incorporated an effective cam-chain tensioner and associated lubrication system, which at last addressed a perennial 911 shortcoming. This enlarged and extensively revised new 3164cc engine produced 231bhp, 27 horsepower up on its predecessor, endowing the Carrera with a level of performance approaching that of the original 911 Turbo of 1974, giving a torque-rich 231bhp, enough to propel the lithe and slippery coupé to over 150 mph, with 0-60 mph coming up in 5.6 seconds. Cars built from September 1986 onwards were fitted with the more user-friendly G50 Getrag gearbox, but all 3.2 Carreras feature galvanised bodies, which together with Porsche's legendary build quality, ensure that these classics are long lasting.

Today, a Carrera 3.2 is now highly sought-after and for very good reason, although finding one in pristine condition is not easy, let alone one with just a few thousand miles, that is almost impossible!

The car presented here is a 1988 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Coupé which was delivered new to Italy in early 1988, and would stay with its original owner until only a few years ago, having only covered a verifiable 6,200km in the last 37 years. Indistinguishable from new throughout, complete with its original service book, handbooks, leather wallet and tool kit, plus a Certificate of Authenticity, Letter of Origin from Porsche and period paperwork, this is surely one of the least used, best preserved and most collectable 911 3.2 examples available anywhere. It warrants close inspection if ‘originality, factory-fresh and time-warp’ are high on your buying criteria – this car is the ‘poster boy’ for the term Collector Quality.
