SUMMARY

The one-off Silk 500S, built by George Silk for a magazine promotion, nearly ten years after Silk Engineering had ceased trading.

DESCRIPTION

  • Silk Engineering Ltd. was founded in the late 1960s by George Silk, a Scott motorcycle enthusiast who worked for Derbyshire Scott specialist Tom Ward.
  • The small company has a fascinating history but didn't succeed commercially and ceased production in 1979
  • This unique 500cc bike (production bikes were 700cc) was commissioned by Classic Mechanics magazine as competition prize in 1987
  • Odometer shows 5,876 original miles, with supporting MOT history
  • Appears to be all original with the exception of a redesigned cylinder head and crankshaft to overcome original limitations (photos provided as well as tooling for head gaskets and pistons)
  • Also has a dual-choke control and a seven-plate clutch which were not part of the original specification
  • Two owners from new and current ownership since 1988
  • Well maintained all its life with regular servicing and MOTs
  • The history file contains an original copy of the magazine in which it featured
  • Runs and rides with no known faults, may require some light recommissioning
