DESCRIPTION
This Maserati Spyder E, styled by Zagato of Milan, is a rarity on British roads and has all the glamour which we have come to expect of Italian Exotica, without being ostentatious. Far more practical than most, with a flexible V6 engine, a convenient manual hood (which it shares with the Aston Martin Zagato Volante ) and plenty of luggage space in the boot, this car oozes class! Although the front-engined, rear wheel drive configuration suggests convention, beneath the bonnet lies a different story. The engine bay is packed with features even more novel than the twin turbos. Each of the alloy V6's cylinder heads run a single overhead camshaft serving three valves per cylinder (the later 4 valve engines were not as robust). The twin 'IHI' water-cooled turbos and 18 valves, complimented by an electronic boost control system, ensures that the 7.4:1 engine compression is not over boosted at any point in the RPM range. Zagato, when producing the Spyder, did not just chop off the top of the coupe ~ but redesigned the complete car. Reducing the wheelbase and lowering the kerb-weight to 1086 kg, these deliberate physical reductions resulted in an attractive car with a most purposeful stance. One of the Spyder's most attractive features is it's unashamedly luxurious interior which features sumptuous hand-stitched leather which abounds throughout with walnut and suede inlays. Zagato produced just 603 Maserati Spyders E 2.8i between 1989 and 1991, of which 186 are right hand drive. This example was registered on the 24 of April 1990 and has been Museum displayed for a long period, resulting in a very low milage of just 35,981. Accompanying the car is a fresh MoT to May 2015, V5C and the private registration number WIJ 201. Notice should be taken of these rare and underestimated Maserati's that are now starting to show their uniqueness and value.
