SUMMARY
A startlingly preserved example of Suzuki’s instant ‘90s performance classic, with barely more than running-in mileage.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
Suzuki rewrote the 750cc-class rulebook with the launch of the GSX-R 750 at the Cologne Motor Show in October 1984. The new machine was an instant hit and the immediate sales success triggered a raft of changes, year after year, as Suzuki rode the wave of success and continued to up the ante for its rivals.
The first major revision came in 1988, with a new chassis design, revised engine and a different body style distinguishing the second series ‘slingshot’ bikes (named after their Mikuni ‘slingshot’ carbs) from the earlier ‘slabsiders.’
For 1991, the GSX-R750M featured faired-in headlights and a slanted nose, further reducing drag, along with a larger seat, new rear bodywork and lamps. This model year marked the last hurrah of the original air-and-oil-cooled machines, as full water-cooling was introduced in 1992.
One of the modern era’s few instant classics, the GSX-R 750 has been a huge commercial success for Suzuki and enjoys cult status today.
The Motorcycle:
Now more than 30 years old, many early GSX-Rs have suffered at the hands of owners who may have over-estimated their abilities and/or decided that they knew better than Suzuki’s engineers and decided to modify their machines in the quest for more performance.
Such calamities have not befallen this pristine example, however. A UK-supplied machine, it is far more than just a lucky survivor, having covered fewer than 3,000 miles from new and now represents the chance to buy a like-new 1991 GSX-R.
In completely standard trim, other than a period Harris performance silencer, you could easily picture this delightful, evocative Suzuki in a dealer’s showroom more than three decades ago, such is its condition. It will be supplied road-ready, fully serviced and with a 12-month MOT – the new owner will just need to source some period leathers to complete the picture.
Summary:
Perfect for the enthusiast who didn’t have the means to ride a GSX-R away from a Suzuki dealer in 1991, this impeccable example will allow its new owner to experience an as-new 750 in 2024.
