SUMMARY
Historically important MG RV8 development car. Chassis #1 – the first correctly bodied MG R.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
British Motor Heritage was already manufacturing MG B bodyshells in the late 1980s, when the success of Mazda’s MX-5 convinced Rover that a market for open two-seater sportscars was more than viable and work began on updating the venerable B roadster to meet modern standards and expectations.
Power came from a 3.9-litre version of Rover’s all-alloy V8, similar to that previously used in the MG B GT V8, producing a healthy 190bhp, which allowed the RV8 to reach 60mph from rest in 5.9 seconds. The original’s suspension was little altered, meaning rear drums and leaf springs – aided by a limited-slip diff - while the body’s outer shape was massaged to meet then-current legislation, without the vast costs and lead-time of tooling up an entirely new car.
Production lasted just three years, with 1,983 units produced, of which 1,579 were exported to Japan. Some 330 RV8s were originally sold in the UK-market but as many as 700 more may have been re-imported from Japan and Australia over the intervening years.
The car:
This RV8 has a remarkable history, as it is the first correctly-bodied car, being the amalgamation of Body No1 and chassis #900000, mated at Faringdom and then delivered to Cowley, as the first of the ‘Project Adder’ cars.
Fitted with a 3.9-litre, high compression Range Rover V8 and full RV8 trim, the car was further modified in Cowley prior to painting in its Flame Red livery. Then used by Engineering for spec homologation, this is literally the first of the breed, defining what an RV8 is legally.
Further development work was undertaken by Krafthouse, using the car as a styling buck for hardtop development, following which a repaint was required, after rectification work for dents caused during the hardtop creation process.
This landmark MG has been owned by an ex-Cowley worker since 2006 and has covered just 15,200 miles.
Summary:
Not just an RV8, this is the RV8, the car used by MG for model homologation. There will never be another, at any price.
