SUMMARY
This two-owner 205 CTi, in near-showroom condition with minimal mileage is absolutely not your run-of-the-mill 205 - it’s an outstanding survivor.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
The 205 is the car that saved Peugeot. Introduced in 1983 to replace that aging 104, it brought a breath of fresh air to the company’s model range, offering increased interior space, comfort and refinement, with a stylish new design language, which was quickly rolled out across the company’s entire range. The new look totally transformed the public’s image of Peugeot, which shook off its ultra-conservative feel and replaced it with some youthful vigour.
But success wasn’t all about the look. The 205 featured fully independent suspension and offered lively and rewarding handling, with excellent ride quality, whatever the engine.
Spurred on by the success of Volkswagen’s Golf GTi, Peugeot’s own hot hatch soon followed and the success of the 205GTi in both 1.6- and later 1.9-litre form – as well as its World Rally Championship successes with the (loosely) 205-based T16 – cemented the 205 as a desirable purchase.
A cabriolet soon followed too, styled and largely assembled by Pininfarina and available with first 1.6- and later 1.9-litre engines, combining much of the look and handling prowess of its GTi brethren with added stylish open-top appeal.
The car:
This delightful CTi is a remarkable survivor. Despite the very obvious appeal of the 205 as a driver’s car par excellence, this example has covered a mere 8,952 miles in 31 years, surely barely enough to drive it to its annual MOT test. Its owner must have the restraint of Mother Teresa!
A l1993 model, it comes with the torquier 1.9-litre power unit, producing a healthy 120hp and – as you’d expect from a car that’s barely been used - it’s probably in as close to showroom condition as a car that hasn’t been preserved in Peugeot’s heritage collection can be, the vendor reporting that there is a small hole in the carpet under the pedals and a small repair on a door rubber.
Given the condition and mileage of most 205s on the market, this CTi is a real rarity.
Summary:
A 1.9 Peugeot 205? With a soft top? And minimal mileage? In superb condition? When will you find another as good as this?
