SUMMARY
A genuine 16,000 mile car with a single family ownership for the first 31 years.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
Alec Issigonis’s masterpiece needs no introduction, as it is among the most recognisable cars in history. Designed as project ADO15 (Austin Drawing Office project number 15), the Mini came about as a result of the fuel shortage caused by the 1956 Suez Crisis. Petrol was once again rationed in the UK, sales of large cars slumped, but the market for German 'bubble' cars boomed. Leonard Lord, the somewhat autocratic head of BMC, reportedly detested these cars so much that he vowed to rid the streets of them and design a 'proper miniature car'. Alec Issigonis had been working for Alvis but had now been recruited back to BMC in 1955. With his skills in designing small cars, he was a natural for the task. The team that designed the Mini was remarkably small: along with Alec Issigonis, there was Jack Daniels (who had worked with him on the Morris Minor), Chris Kingham (who had been with him at Alvis), two engineering students, and four draughtsmen. Together, by October 1957, they had designed and built the original prototype. Over the 42 years during which it was built, the humble Mini went on to take its place in history as one of the world's greatest cars.
The Car:
Offered here is a beautiful 1993 Mini Sprite automatic, which is possibly one of the lowest-mileage examples available in the world today. The first two owners were mother and daughter, who purchased it new and cared for this little black charmer until the early part of this year. Between them and the subsequent owners, the car has covered an extraordinary 16,348 miles.
There is a very good history file with the car, packed with old MOTs, tax discs, and numerous invoices, all of which confirm the extraordinary mileage.
The bodywork is excellent, having been garaged almost all of its life — not a bubble or a rust spot anywhere. The paint is original, which is astonishing for a 33-year-old Mini.
The car is completely standard save for 10-inch Mini Light-style wheels, steering wheel, and an upgraded grille. The original grille and steering wheel are included with the car, should you wish to return it to its original form.
Earlier this year, the car was completely reconditioned and fully serviced, along with new brakes, hoses, and a fan belt. It is supplied by the vendor completely ready to go, with a fresh 12-month MOT, as he sadly lets the car go to free up money and space.
Summary:
This is potentially a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy a 31-year-old Mini as if it were only two years old. Don’t let it slip away.
