The E34 M5 was a continuation of the M5 series and was hand built from 1988 to 1995. It is reputed that BMW test drivers could distinguish which of their colleagues built any individual car based on the specific handling characteristics and hand built nature of the E34 M5. In 1991 the engine displacement was increased from 3.5 to 3.8 litres and power output subsequently increased to 335bhp, making the M5 the largest displacement six-cylinder engine BMW had ever created.
