SUMMARY
Superbly presented, this is one of the best-engineered GT40s replicas that we have had the pleasure of listing.
DESCRIPTION
GTD Supercars were the best known and most respected builders of GT40 Replicas in the country in the late 1990s and had the necessary facilities and talented engineers to make an excellent job of it. They had started out originally as agents for the KVA GT40 Replica but it wasn't long before they had redesigned the front and rear of the KVA chassis and were selling the cars as GTDs. As is often the way with bright young engineers, they weren't happy until they were building the whole car to their own standards and many of these still take pride of place at GT40 events today.
On offer here, this GTD 40 is one of the best-engineered GT40 replicas that we have had the pleasure of listing. It's supplied with a comprehensive history file containing lots of correspondence between the first owner and the factory outlining the ‘module’ with details of specification and bespoke finishes. It also contains the original factory invoices, the Certificate of Newness, the DVLA build sheet approval, a plethora of invoices and a number of older MOTs. Importantly, the custom specification included air-conditioning, oil cooler, radio and immobiliser. It's motivated by the traditional Ford 302ci V8 topped with Weber 48 IDF carburettors which have recently been serviced.
The original owner used the GTD extensively, joining the GT40 Enthusiasts Club and signed up for the ‘circuit’ of events and a trip to Le Mans. He obviously appreciated that to fully enjoy the experience it required a well engineered car, air-conditioning and a proper set up, all of which is detailed in the history file. Testament to this is that it looks the part, sitting 'four square' and the quality of engineering is evident. The odometer displays just under 25,000 miles which shows that the car was built to be used and it undoubtedly has.
Whilst we all admire the iconic Zenith Blue and Tangerine Gulf presentation of the Gulf cars, this example is finished in Midnight Blue and Deep Orange, a striking colour scheme which looks even better and attracts admirers everywhere. At the time of our photo shoot the car fired up immediately, sounded glorious and the air conditioning was quickly blowing ice cold.
The majority of GT40 replicas, re-creations and homage look good but realistically would not be ideal for a long run or a weekend away. This super GTD has been thoughtfully prepared and equipped and is eminently suitable to go where you want to go. It would benefit from a little detailing here and there but that's half the fun when you buy a 'new' classic. A fabulous example and welcome anywhere.
